Career opportunities for statisticians
I am pursuing my B.Tech and wish to know if I could shift to hardcore maths (statistics) after I graduate. Will it be feasible, and what are the career prospects open for a statistician?
Raghu
The Indian Statistical Institute offers a two-year Master of Science (M.S.) post-graduate degree in Quantitative Economics and the eligibility for admission to the course is a Bachelor's degree in Economics / Mathematics/ Statistics / Physics. However, engineering graduates can also join the course.
A two- year M. Tech programme in Quality, Reliability and Operations Research is also offered at the institute and the eligibility for pursuing the course is:
(i) Master's degree in statistics or Master's degree in Mathematics with Probability and Statistics as major subjects; or Bachelor's degree in Engineering/Technology or equivalent or PG diploma in SQC & OR from the Indian Statistical Institute. Prospects
For positions involving quality and productivity improvement, training in engineering or physics is useful.
Manufacturing firms hire statisticians with Master's or Doctoral degree to look after quality control of various products, including pharmaceuticals, motor vehicles, aircraft, chemicals, food, etc.
Statisticians, with knowledge of engineering and physics, can find jobs in the field of research and development, helping scientists and engineers design and improve production processes for consistent quality of newly developed products. Many statisticians also find opportunities to develop statistical software for computer software manufacturing firms.
In the manufacturing industry, statisticians ensure production standards using different methods and offering advice when new methods or different ideas are implemented.
Since computers are extensively used for statistical applications, a strong background in computer applications is highly recommended along with knowledge of statistics.
Business firms generally rely on employees with statistical background to forecast sales, analyse business conditions and solve management problems. In addition, consulting firms increasingly offer sophisticated statistical services to other businesses.
Statisticians design the elaborate surveys for gathering data. These surveys can relate to anything from television viewership to use of a company's products, consumer goods, etc.
Further, organisations in the following category also employ statisticians:
Investment companies -- for tracking the stock market
Insurance companies -- for modelling risks and life expectancies
Banks -- for assessing credit risks
Consulting Actuaries -- for providing advice on pension schemes
When to bell the CAT?
I'm in my second year of engineering and plan to take CAT in my final year. Please tell me when should I start preparing for the examination and take coaching, if any.
Harsha Kiran
According to Manek N. Daruwala, Director, TIME, "The ideal time to start preparing for the CAT examination is your 3rd year of engineering, sometime around September / October At the initial level, concentrate on vocabulary, graduate to quantitative skills and then finally focus on logical thinking.
It would be ideal to phase your plan in such a way that you have sufficient time to work on each area. Coaching centres also provide long-term and short-term courses lasting 6-15 months."
Your present state of preparedness determines the preparation time you need to allocate. For a candidate who has been in touch with basic Mathematics and English with good reading habit, the preparation should begin 6 to 8 months in advance.
It takes a completely dedicated effort to succeed in such tests. For most part, it is hard grind, repetitive and unrelenting. Constant practice is evidently the key to success at the tests.
Other candidates should start early and work hard and systematically.
The objective should be on learning and constant practice in order to attain peak levels of performance just around the time of the entrance test. Time is the most important factor in these exams; you need to keep it in mind while attempting practice tests as well.
