A career in multimedia

There is an unquenchable thirst for computer-based courses among the youth.

Courses like the B.Tech. in Computer Science and Engineering or Master of Computer of Applications have their merits as well as demerits. Several years of study to secure a qualification and the possible obsolescence of the course content of the first semester by the time the student reaches the final semester are obvious disadvantages of such long-term programmes.

However, their exhaustive coverage and development of skills for meeting the challenges of emerging trends are noteworthy features.

Short programmes of one-year duration or even less, with a specific objective of skill development, are a blessing to many who may not be able to secure admission to long-term courses or pursue them.

Courses in animation and multimedia come under this category. After securing a job that matches the qualification, the candidate can rise to higher levels in his/her career through further part-time/on-line education and constant updating of information and skills.

Multimedia

Multimedia, as the name implies may involve a fine mixture of text, graphics, photographs, animation, video, sound, and interactivity, offering boundless possibilities in conveying a message. Cinema has gained great heights by absorbing the gifts of multimedia. Who can forget the dinosaurs of the Hollywood blockbuster, Jurassic Park.

Television commercials are no exception. Rising popularity of multimedia opens the door to larger opportunities for jobs. Those blessed with artistic talents and imagination have immense possibilities. An appropriate mix of art and technology enhances the value of the software. Job opportunities in the fields of television, cinema, video production, web design, preparation of CD ROMs, advertising agencies, publishing, fashion designing, textile designing, interior design, criminal investigation, etc are for the taking. Freelancing is a possibility in big industrial cities in areas such as CD writing, graphic design, and web design.

Training

All said and done, a person who wishes to pursue a career in multimedia should have an aptitude for drawing.

There are several computer-training centres that offer training in multimedia.

Before joining one of them, we should know the facilities in terms of equipment and faculty, as well as the placement records of those who have undergone training in the institution.

Major institutions

Major institutions offering long-term programmes covering wider areas that would help us to rise in this field may also be considered.
