It is admission time for paramedical courses
An alternative career in health care.
The Directorate of Medical Education, Kerala, has invited applications for admission to the following paramedical courses being conducted this year.
Diploma in Medical Laboratory Technology (DMLT) course
Diploma in Radiological Technology (DRT) course
Diploma in Ophthalmic Assistant (DOA) course
Dental Mechanic Certificate (DMC) course
Dental Hygienist Certificate (DHC) course
Duration of all these job-oriented courses is two years.
The DMLT course is conducted in all the five Government Medical Colleges in Kerala.
The number of seats in various medical colleges are: Thiruvananthapuram - 40, Kozhikode - 50, Kottayam - 15, Thrissur - 15; for SC/ST - 20 and Alappuzha (15), Public Health Laboratory, Thiruvananthapuram - 15, Priya Darshini Institute of Paramedical Science (PIPMS), Thiruvananthapuram, (for SC / ST only) - 20.
The DRT Course is being offered in the medical colleges.
The number of seats are: Thiruvananthapuram - 10, Kozhikode - 30, Kottayam - 15, Thrissur - 15; for SC/ST - 20 and Alappuzha - 10, PIPMS for SC/ST only - 30.
The DOA course is offered by the medical colleges.
The number of seats are: Thiruvananthapuram - 10, Kozhikode - 20, Kottayam - 15, Thrissur - 5; SC/ST - 20 and Alappuzha - 5, PIPMS, Thiruvananthapuram - 20.
The DHC course is offered only at Government Dental College, Thiruvananthapuram. Total seats - 10.
The DMC course is available at the Dental Colleges in Thiruvananthapuram (5), Kozhikode (10), PIPMS, Thiruvananthapuram (10).
Minimum eligibility for these courses is Plus Two/Higher Secondary/Pre-Degree Examination with Physics, Chemistry and Biology as optional subjects or any other examination recognised by the universities in Kerala as equivalent, provided that they have secured an aggregate of 50 per cent marks in optional subjects.
Relaxation of 10 per cent will be allowed to SC/ST candidates and 5 per cent for SEBC candidates, provided their annual family income does not exceed Rs. 2,50,000.
Only Indian citizens of Kerala origin shall be eligible for admission. They should have completed 17 years as on 30.11.2004.
Admissions are based on the rank list prepared by the Director of Medical Education. Merit is assessed on the basis of total marks secured by the applicant in the optional subjects at Plus Two level/equivalent examination. The rank list is prepared in each category with a maximum of 450 marks.
In case there is a tie, the candidate with higher marks in English at the Plus Two level/equivalent examination will be ranked higher. Short-listed candidates will be called for a personal appearance at the Directorate of Medical Education, the dates of which will be notified in the media.
Options relating to the course and college should be chosen at the time of the personal appearance. The applicants can opt for a maximum of three courses.
Mandatory reservation is made for SC/ST, SEBC (family income is up to Rs. 2,50,000) and physically handicapped (minimum of 40 per cent disability) applicants as per rules.
Other reserved seats: (Nativity of Kerala is not required for these reserved categories.)
DMLT course - Two seats for the candidates sponsored by the Government of Mizoram, one seat for the nominee of the Government of Pondicherry, two seats for nominees of the Lakshadweep Administration, two seats for nominees from Andaman and Nicobar Islands and two seats for the nominees of the Government of Bhutan.
DRT course - Two seats for the nominees from Lakshadweep, one seat for the nominee from Andaman and Nicobar Islands.
DOA course - Two seats for the nominees of the Lakshadweep Administration, one seat for the candidates sponsored by the Andaman and Nicobar Islands.
DMC course - Two seats for the nominees from Lakshadweep, one seat for the nominee of Andaman and Nicobar Islands.
How to apply
Application forms and prospectus can be had from the Government Medical Colleges from August 25 on payment of Rs. 200 (for SC/ST candidates Rs.100).
For getting the application form by post, one should send a money order for Rs. 235 (for SC/ST candidates Rs. 135 only) to the Principal of one of the Government Medical Colleges.
Application form is common for all the above courses and hence one can apply in a single application form for up to three courses. Separate application form is available for SC/ST candidates.
Completed applications should be submitted to the Director of Medical Education, Medical College P.O, Thiruvananthapuram - 695 011 before September 20.
Fees payable for each course (same rate for all courses) tuition fee - Rs. 3,300, miscellaneous fee - Rs. 125, caution deposit - Rs. 750, stationery fee - Rs. 125.
DMLT: Biochemistry, Histopathology, Blood Banking, Haematology, Microbiology and Parasitology.
DRT: General Radiation Physics, Anatomy, Physiology, Pathology, Physics of Medical Imaging and Radiotherapy, Radiography, including Dark Room Technique.
DOA: Basic Science, Anatomy, Physiology, Pharmacy, Physiological Optics, Refraction and Muscle Imbalance, Refractive Error, Ophthalmic Instruments, Retenoscopy, Common Eye Diseases, Community Ophthalmic Prevention of Blindness, Health Education, Visual Rehabilitation, etc.
DMC: Applied Physics, Chemistry, Tooth Morphology, Dental Mechanics, Dental Materials, Metallurgy, etc.
DHC: Anatomy, Physiology, Histology, Materia Medica, Pathology, Bacteriology, Food Nutrition, Radiology, Dental Hygiene, Oral Prophylaxis, Dental Health Education, Social and Public Health Dentistry, Operation Room Technique, Chair Side Assistance, Dental Materials, Dental Ethics and Orientation in Dentistry.
