College for holistic counselling

Helping out children under stress

A LOT of emphasis is placed these days on psychological counselling in student life, family matters and professional problems.

No wonder then that good counsellors are in demand.

Montfort College, affiliated to the Bangalore University, is one of the institutes dedicated exclusively to offering a "Holistic Counsellor Training" programme. The college is owned by the Montfort brothers of St. Gabriel, an international society working in the field of education and human development. It offers a two-year M.Sc course in Psychological Counselling and a one-year diploma course in counselling.

Besides equipping the participants with theoretical knowledge, basic and advanced counselling skills and strategies, the course introduces them to the following fields of specialisation — Marriage and Family Counselling, Educational Counselling and Human Resource Management.

The M.Sc programme includes topics such as behaviour dysfunctions, group counselling, psychological assessment, indigenous and transpersonal psychology and research methodologies. Another interesting subject dealt with is alternative healing techniques. Students taking up the programme are familiarised with techniques such as pranic healing, reiki and acupressure. "Taking into consideration the social, educational and family life scenarios of our present day society, the counselling programmes offered at the college aim at training counsellors to assist those in need of professional help to promote mental health and cope with stressful life situations," according to Br. Mathew Panathanath, Director of Montfort College.

The diploma course offers a holistic approach to counselling. The college is waiting for approval from the Bangalore University to initiate a M.Sc programme in Clinical Psychology. The intake for the M.Sc (Psychological Counselling) course is 20 while that for the diploma programme is 24.

Montfort College runs a regular counselling service for those in need of help and operates a Family Counselling Centre approved by the Central Social Welfare Board. The college is also a nodal centre for the Entrepreneurship Development course offered by the Entrepreneurship Development Institute in Ahmedabad. For this one-year correspondence course, contact classes are held twice a year at the nodal centre. Those who have finished their graduation or those with some years of work experience are eligible to apply. Women who have finished their high school may also apply.

For details, contact the college on Old Madras Road, Indiranagar or call Ph:25284050/25283320.
