Leap to your defence

It's as good as a goldmine. But it needs a lot of courage, hard work and aptitude to succeed. The NDA stands testimony to one's zest for holding nerves at the right time and at the right place.

ARE YOU willing to explore possibilities of a good career other than through EAMCET? If you answer in the affirmative, perhaps you should start planning your career. More so, if you are in Intermediate. This is the time to do some serious thinking and prepare for different entrance examinations simultaneously.

The National Defence Academy (NDA) entrance examination notification has already been issued and a career in armed forces is certainly worth considering. The best part of it is that if you plan properly, you could take AIEEE or IIT tests also along with the NDA's even while keeping EAMCET option open.

Let's now look at what do armed forces offer if one were to clear the NDA test. The successful student completes his graduation course at the NDA in Khadakvasla and will automatically branch out either into Army, Navy or Air Force depending on his aptitude and interest.

And now comes the most interesting part. If the NDA graduate opts for technical stream, the NDA cadet can join any of the prestigious Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) and pursue the courses.

Have cake, eat it too!

And what have you got there? The armed forces will bear the entire expenditure of study at the IIT even while the NDA graduate continues to draw his salary and perks. In other words, the young officer will get paid to study in an IIT and which other organisation will provide such an opportunity!

Now let's think of other exams. The NDA test is to be held in April next (see notification in Employment News dated October 16 and the last date for submitting applications is November 16), while the All-India Engineering/Pharmacy/Architecture Entrance Examination (AIEEE) is to be held in May. Around the same time EAMCET and IIT entrance tests will also be conducted.

What will happen if one is selected in the NDA? In case the student joins the Air Force, he will join the Air Force Academy in Hyderabad and after completion of basic training he will come out as a Commissioned Officer in the rank of Flying Officer. In case of Navy, he will join the Indian Naval Academy at Kochi and will become an officer in the rank of Sub-Lieutenant. A student joining the Army will proceed to the Indian Military Academy in Dehradun and will join in the rank of a Lieutenant.

"The opportunities are limitless, facilities and benefits unlimited. Job opportunities at global and technology levels do not at any point match with the career openings that the armed forces offer.

When selected, a candidate is commissioned as a class I officer and is given all the facilities that he cannot even dream of in the average civil life, " says Capt. R. Sircar (retd.), who runs the Officers Training Academy (OTA) in Secunderabad (Phone nos: 040-27834739/27820339/27820672 email: officers_academy@sify.com) which trains students to take different exams for entry into armed forces.

'Name it, they have it'

Capt. Sircar points out that after entry into the armed forces, one can get a study leave for two years and the growth opportunities are virtually unlimited.

"A successful candidate can even get into research and development. From engineering to medicine. From administration to strategy. From armament technology to management. You name it. They have it."

Apart from attractive pay and perks, the armed forces offer something which a private organisation can never. Great lifestyle and an opportunity in adventure sports.

Mountaineering, river rafting, gliding, trekking, skydiving, parasailing, shooting, skiing and many more. As they say it.... do you have it in you? If yes, try taking the NDA exam next April.

When to prepare for NDA test

* The test should be taken immediately after first year exam of Intermediate or first year final of plus two system since the selection procedure for NDA - from the time you fill the firm till you get selected - is nearly 18 months.

The selection process

* Age: Not born earlier than 02-01-1987 and not later than 01-07-1989.

* Education: Intermediate or equivalent passed; presently undergoing Intermediate or equivalent final year likely to appear in March/April 2005. Candidates can be from any stream - sciences or humanities.
