Prime role for software testers

Ensuring virus-free software

WITH INTENSE competition being witnessed in the Information Technology sector, it has become imperative for companies to develop the right quality software within the stipulated time. Software testing has emerged as an indispensable function of companies that are into software development. Whenever a company such as Microsoft releases a new version of Windows, it has to first test it and also incessantly develop solutions to save it from virus attacks.

This is where the software testers play a prime role. With new softwares being invented, it is the responsibility of the software testing professionals to find the bugs in the software. Software testing is vital for increasing productivity. The act of designing tests is one of the most effective error prevention mechanisms known. Effective software test management practices are a prerequisite for effective testing. These practices include: initial test planning activities, defining and managing test objectives, test progress monitoring activities, product and test quality tracking activities and test configuration control activities.

Testing accounts for almost 30 per cent of the software development market. The increased use of software in products ranging from computers to cars to mobile phones only means that this industry will offer huge scope and exposure in the near future.

Software testing promises great opportunities for people who are interested in building a career with a difference in the Information Technology arena. It is also been noticed that a test engineer reaches test manager level in five years as compared to eight years taken by a software developer to become a project manager with a similar profile. The demand for software testers in India is likely to swell as the Indian software testing companies offer testing services at lower costs when compared to other parts of the globe.

Professional training is a must to enter the software-testing field. Training in the concepts of testing on different hardware configurations, processes, using testing tools, working with test management, etc. is required before working on a live project. To be successful in this career, one should have the patience to work with the problem until it is solved. Ability to identify the problem and analyse the reason for defects is also a must.
