They had the right answers

The NPS, Rajajinagar, quiz team

THREE YOUNGSTERS — Hari Priya M., Raghunandan V. and Sushanth G.S. of National Public School, Rajajinagar, have returned home victorious after winning the Brahm Prakash Memorial Material quiz at Kalpakkam. They will be felicitated at Thiruvananthapuram on November 17 on the occasion of World Metallurgy Day.

The quiz was held in three rounds, quarterfinals, semi-finals and the finals. The finals saw television quiz master, Sumanth C. Raman, at the helm with NPS racing to victory and the team from Sonabeda, Orissa, placed second. The Indian Institute of Metals, Kalpakkam Chapter, conducts the Brahm Prakash Memorial Materials Quiz at Kalpakkam on an annual basis.

The Metallurgy Department of the Indian Institute of Science conducted the preliminary round called the Bangalore Metallurgy Quiz 2004 on October 2 to select the two teams that would represent the Bangalore Chapter at Kalpakkam. After three rounds of quizzing, the teams from NPS, Rajajinagar, and another team comprising Ankur Gandhe, Bindu Bhargavi J. and Nischit Hedge were chosen to attend the national event.

Jaya Sinha, chemistry teacher from NPS, Rajajinagar, who guided the team says that the teachers motivate the students into quizzing. Though material science is not dealt with in the school, the teachers help the students to get focussed. The students get professional help and the IISc. is one resource centre for them.

NPS has been participating in this quiz from 1992 onwards and in the first year of participation walked away with the top prize. The school always selects students from Class XI for the competition and if it does well, the team gets repeated the next year too. The NPS students have been excelling in various competitions including the Science Olympiad, Joe map quiz etc.

A beaming Hari Priya says that natural sciences like material science is a fascinating subject which helps in exploring new things, while Raghunath talks about the quizmaster Sumanth who has a way of egging students on to get their best. Priya says: "The previous year, we lost; we could not go beyond the first round. But it gave us a lot of insight about the entire concept." Without hesitation she says that the teams from Calcutta and Sonabeda are the best from all angles. This particular quiz competition attracted 30 teams.
