SEETHALAKSHMI RAMASWAMI College (popularly known as SRC), functioning from the Padmabhushan Sri N.Ramaswami Ayyar Educational Complex, is situated on the banks of the Cauvery in the heart of the Rock City, Tiruchi. The noble vision of its founder, Padmabhushan N. Ramaswami Ayyar, to empower women through education saw the emergence of a girls elementary school, Savitri Vidyasala, in 1938, and the SRC in 1951. Starting with just 11 students and 13 teachers, it now has a student strength of 4,100.
The college became autonomous in 1987, which enabled the institution to offer innovative and socially relevant courses. As a pre-requisite to becoming a deemed university the cherished dream of its founder the college obtained accreditation in 1998. Moulding women graduates nurtured in Indian tradition and culture, empowerment of women, inculcation of social and environmental awareness, and development of self-reliance reflecting contemporary concerns are its objectives. The college offers 22 courses at UG level, 17 courses at PG level, 42 certificate courses, two diploma courses, part time and full time M.Phil. courses in six departments, and Ph.D. in three departments. Field work is a compulsory component for all students. Its library has a collection of 60,000 books.
The institution follows the Choice-Based Credit System (CBCS), in UG as well as PG levels. It also has the distinction of being the first Arts and Science college in the region to start an internal quality assurance cell - Idea Resources Involving Standards in 1998 - and accords high importance to extra-curricular activities, including NCC, NSS, Youth Red Cross, sports, music, and folk arts. Another interesting feature is the regular student evaluation of the faculty and faculty evaluation of the principal.
To make all the courses job-oriented and to address the diverse needs of the students, the CBCS in the cafeteria model was introduced in 2003.
SRC is one among the 10 colleges in India to be chosen for the prestigious Pathway to Higher Education project, sponsored by the Ford Foundation, U.S.A and authorised by the Foundation for Academic Excellence and Access, New Delhi.
During 2003-2004, Rs. 49.50 lakhs was dispersed to 2,800 students as scholarship. Seven students have been selected to receive a scholarship of about Rs. 40,000 each a year for three years from the Ford Foundation.
It has also been credited by the Bharathidasan University as being one among the five best colleges engaged in research.
