A timely service

The National Service Scheme volunteers of the K. L. N. College of Engineering regulated traffic at important points in the city, along with the Tamil Nadu Police Traffic Wardens, on November 9. They also educated the pedestrians about traffic rules and zebra crossings and pavements. Over 60 volunteers took part in the programme in the Periyar bus stand and shopping complex bus stand areas. The NSS Programme Officer, G. Jeyakumar, and the faculty member, A. Raviekumar, joined the students. The Principal, S. Ganapathy, said it was a timely service.

An interesting debate on the topic, `Who is more responsible for society's progress — men or women', was organised at the Sourashtra College. Students led by two faculty members took part in the debate, moderated by Damodaran.

While four students led by the NSS Programme Officer, E.P. Gnaneswaran, argued for men, a team, led by K.K. Vijayakumar, championed the cause of women. The NSS wing conducted the debate.

A personality development programme was organised for the girls of the SACS MAVMM Engineering College on November 6 and 7 by the Young Men's Christian Association.

Prabakar Navamani, president, YMCA, Madurai, inaugurated the lecture sessions, which had a talk on `Building self-confidence', by the YMCA general secretary, Rev. S. Suyambu. The programme also had sessions on `Destroying the evil thoughts', `How to be self-motivated', `Mind your basic hardware (body)', and `Values for health, happiness and harmony'.

Yoga, energy management, body language and the opportunities and threats for the youth were covered. Oratorical skills were also taught to the students. A total of 41 girls participated in the camp.

The Principal, Manjunatha Rao, and the YMCA secretary, H.D. Rajasekharan, spoke.

The E.M.G. Yadava Women's College is gearing for a major post-Deepavali event. The Department of Mathematics is organising a 10-day group discussion on `Domination in discrete structures' from November 15 to 24.

The Department of Science and Technology, New Delhi, is sponsoring the event, in which senior scientists and researchers from universities in India and abroad will take part.

Interactive sessions and problem-solving exercises will be part of the programme that will be inaugurated by the University Grants Commission Vice-Chairman, V.N. Rajasekaran Pillai.

The Principal, K. Vasantha, is chairperson of the organising committee.
