Self-discipline, the key to moulding mind
SELF-DISCIPLINE, SELF-CONTROL, living in harmony with Nature, speaking the truth, having concern for society and respecting human values, are some of the main factors that mould students into responsible citizens.
This was the view expressed by the Vice-Chancellor of Bharathiar University, S. Sivasubramanian, while inaugurating an NSS parade camp on the campus. He expressed the hope that the camp, organised for the Southern States and Union Territories would pave the way for exchange of ideas and cultural values, and also promote devotion to the country.
He urged young people to innovate and improve the lives of the common people, and emphasised that education without societal concern was "worthless".

OVER 200 people from Saravanampatti and nearby areas benefited at a free medical camp in orthopaedics and physiotherapy, organised at the P. P. G. College of Physiotherapy, in association with Ashwin Hospital. Ninety patients underwent physiotherapy on the inaugural day.

STUDENTS OF business administration at Jansons School of Business (JSB) learnt the basics of table manners and etiquette, at a special programme on the campus. It helped the students learn the right way to behave at formal dinners, which they would often be required to attend while pursuing their careers.
Besides this, the programme enabled the youngsters to grasp the basics of making pleasant conversation and being at ease at business gatherings and social get-togethers.

AS PART of the Children's Day celebrations on the campus, the Department of Human Development of Avinashilingam Deemed University organised an awareness programme on safety and protection of children, for middle school students.
The coordinator of Childline, S. Ashokan, and an advocate, Mathivanan, conducted the programme. The Dean of Home Science, N. Jaya Muthu, presided.
Childline worked for the protection of street children, and offered them medical and legal aid, besides security and safety for children in distress. The telephone number of Childline was 1098.

POWER SYSTEMS were gaining importance these days and students could even take up doctoral programmes in this area, especially on improving the quality of electrical power, said the principal of the Government College of Technology, S. Arumugam.
He was inaugurating a two-week, short-term training programme conducted by the Department of Electrical and Electronics Engineering, at Kumaraguru College of Technology. The All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) and the Indian Society for Technical Education (ISTE) had jointly sponsored the programme.
Mr. Arumugam said that solid-state controllers and embedded systems were being used in load management of power systems, maintenance of sub-systems and improving the quality of power.

ADOLESCENCE IS fraught with problems. The growing up process is painful for everyone, but support from friends and family sees many through this phase. Those who don't have a support system need outside help to cope with the changes associated with this stage.
One such centre is functioning at the Bharathiar University. The counselling centre there recently organised an Awakening Day celebration. During the course of the day, students took part in a slide show on counselling, an exhibition on the topic and some lectures.
They could also learn how to prepare for and face interview and how to fight loneliness and be sociable. Pre-marital counselling was offered and students were made aware of memory aids, emotional management and personality development. The centre, being run for the past four years, is also open to the public.

SUCCESS REQUIRES proper plan. To create awareness among college students on these aspects and to guide them accordingly, students of Department of Management Studies organised a lecture `Steps to Success'. The activities of the association for the year was also inaugurated.
The chief guest of the function S. Ramamurthy, the Chief Executive Officer of Fluidics stressed the need to develop desire, commitment, hard work, character, positive thinking, persistence and performance.
The chairman and managing trustee of Karpagam Educational Institutions, R. Vasantha Kumar, asked the students to focus on communication skills.
