A matter of attitude and will power

G V P College of Engineering Nov.14.

Dear friends, have you ever thought of this question: "What is personality?" The complex of all the attributes- behavioural, temperamental, emotional and mental- that characterise a unique individual is one's personality. Much impetus has been given to the development of the same in recent times.

Each of us has a goal, and developing one's personality is, but moving towards the same. True, a good academic record may land one a much sought after job. But then, what next? What is it that takes one further up ahead? This is where one's personality is a desideratum.

Each of us yearns for success. What is it then, which makes successful people so? Are successful people intelligent? Is it their intelligence alone that makes them successful? Research has shown that successfully intelligent people discern their strengths and weaknesses, and then fathom how to capitalise on their strengths, and to compensate for or remedy their weaknesses. They succeed in part because they achieve a functional balance among a "triarchy" of abilities, which include:

* Analytical Abilities, which are used to analyse, evaluate, judge, compare and contrast.

* Creative Abilities, which are used to create, invent, discover and imagine.

* Practical Abilities, which are used to apply, utilise, implement, and activate.

Successfully intelligent people are not necessarily high in all three of these abilities, but find a way effectively to exploit whatever pattern of abilities they may have.

Developing oneself is not a one-time activity but spans over the entire life of an individual. Is it an arduous task? It is a matter of attitude and will power. The prerequisite though, is commitment towards one's self.

Now, the question: "Do you have a personality?" I am sure each one of us does. But, is it what you really want? I leave that to you to answer.
