The message and the warning to polluters

ENVIRONMENT HAS become one of the prime topics of discussion these days. Various Government as well as non-Government bodies have been working towards a pollution-free environment.

Paramount importance is being given to this subject right from the level of primary classes to the highest academic sections. Emphasis is laid on a variety of issues such as conservation of the environment, management of pollution, its effects on health and well-being of human beings and other organisms.

Solutions and remedies for pollution are all being thought of, discussed and debated the world over. Karnataka has been gifted with rich natural wealth and the protection, preservation and proper management of this wealth has become important.

With a view to creating environmental awareness among students, the Karnataka State Pollution Control Board (KSPCB) has launched a novel project — the Mobile Exhibition Project.

The Senior Environmental Officer of KSPCB, M.N. Jayaprakash, said the project aims at initiating the process of questioning, experimenting, analysing and understanding the concepts dealing with environment. "This helps to create an understanding about degradation and pollution of our environment due to various factors and also to educate the students about the importance of conservation and management of environment," he says. The entire unit (van), costing Rs. 40 lakhs, has been designed in a way that the theme for all exhibits are chosen from prescribed curriculum and thus act as guidelines to understand the concepts well. The important and common environmental concepts taught will include introduction to ecology and environment, forest and wildlife, water, renewable energy resources, pollution and its effects on human health and other living organisms.

The mobile unit has computers and video facilities. Documentary films related to environment s will be screened.

Three-dimensional

Three dimensional (3D) models signifying important environmental features have been installed in the unit. The main intention behind designing and installing these models is to enhance the knowledge of the student community about the geography of our land, its location and the way it has been subjected to degradation.

Special reference has been made to energy demands and importance of conservation of natural resources. The 3D models include land forms of Karnataka, Western Ghat ranges, open cast mining and watershed management .
