Jobs aplenty for agriculture graduates
AGRICULTURAL GRADUATES came under the spotlight at the `TNAU Job Fair 2004', organised on the campus of the Tamil Nadu Agricultural University (TNAU), during the first week of November.
The spadework began several days in advance, with the Directorate of Students Welfare of the University sending out advance information about the recruitment drive, to all the deans and placement professors of the constituent colleges of TNAU.
Candidates who had registered for placement received letters informing them about the event.
Among the candidates who turned up were several from the Agricultural College and Research Institutes at Coimbatore, Madurai, Killikulam and Tiruchi; the Horticultural College and Research Institute, Kumulur; and the Forest College and Research Institute, Mettupalayam.
Eighteeen firms conducted campus interviews for selection and appointment of graduates to various posts.
Company representatives had come from Agro Care India, Bangalore; Cauvery Palm Oil, Tiruchi; Spac Tapioca Products, Erode; Prepare, Chennai; P. L. Agro Tech. Ltd., Mettupalayam; and Dhan Foundation, Madurai.
Representatives explained in detail the nature of each job, prospects for career growth, salary offered and perquisites extended. Each firm had a separate counter at which interested participants registered their names.
On the basis of the information provided, the companies carried out interviews to shortlist candidates for recruitment.
In keeping with the current trend of the University in encouraging entrepreneurship among agricultural graduates, some of the companies conducted special sessions on self-employment.
Officials from M/s Metlife Insurance Company, Chennai, conducted a brainstorming session on selling insurance.
Representatives of Canara Bank and Syndicate Bank organised lecture-cum-discussions on the development of agri-clinics and related projects.
On the second day, the University was a busy place again, with some more companies conducting interviews and collecting bio-data for interviews during the next few days. About 120 candidates turned up for the event.
The companies were: Rasi Seeds, Salem; Syngenta India Ltd., Pune; Mahabir, Chennai; D1 Oils Ltd.; Kemin Nutritional Technologies (India) Pvt. Ltd.; Parkins, Coimbatore; and Medicinal Plants, New Delhi.
