Psychology and clinical psychology

Q. I am pursuing my graduation in psychology. Could you provide me with information on colleges offering post-graduate courses in psychology/clinical psychology in India, with special reference to South India? - Devi Soumyaja, Kochi

A. Psychology courses are available at the post-graduate degree, M.Phil. and doctoral levels. Post- graduate courses in psychology are offered both in the arts and science streams. Admission requirement to the master's degree programme is a bachelor's degree with psychology as one of the subjects. About 80 universities in India offer this course.

Specialisation

Clinical psychology is one among the specialisations related to psychology. Clinical psychologists study the diagnosis, causes and treatment of mental disorders. Other sperelated subjects include applied psychology, cognitive psychology, counselling psychology, development psychology, educational psychology, experimental psychology, social psychology, etc.

Many of the universities, which have master's degree courses, also offer M.Phil. and doctoral degree programmes in psychology. Nowadays doctoral degrees significantly improve one's career prospects in the field.

In Kerala, the Department of Psychology, the University of Kerala, University Campus, at Kariavattom, Thiruvananthapuram, offers MA, M.Phil. and Ph.D. courses. Phone: 0471-2418304. The Government College for Women, Vazhuthacad, Thiruvananthapuram, and the University of College, Palayam, Thiruvananthapuram, also conduct MA Psychology courses under Kerala University.

The School of Behavioural Sciences (phone: 0481-2731034) under Mahatma Gandhi University, Kottayam, offers a M.Sc. course in health and behavioural sciences. Graduates in arts with 45 per cent marks or science with 50 per cent marks are eligible for admission. M.Phil. in rehabilitation psychology is also offered here. Master's degree holders in psychology with 55 per cent marks are eligible.

MA psychology is offered by U.C. College, Aluva, affiliated to MG University. The Department of Psychology under the University of Calicut, Thenhippalam (phone: 0494 2401144-2401152) offers M.Sc. psychology, M.Phil and Ph.D. Mother Arts and Science College, Peruvallur, Thrissur, conducts an M.Sc. psychology course and Prajyoti Niketan College, Pudukkad, has an M.Sc. clinical psychology. These Colleges are affiliated to Calicut University.

Sree Sankaracharya University of Sanskrit, Kalady, provides research study facilities leading to Ph.D. in psychology.

M.J.P. Rohilkhand University, Baraeli - 243001 is also offering a MA clinical psychology course.

The Department of Psychology, under Barkatullah University, Bhopal, conducts an MA clinical psychology course of two years duration. Diagnosis and therapy of mental ailments are its special features. MA, M.Phil. psychology courses are also available.

The Manipal Academy of Higher Education offers M.Phil clinical psychology for post-graduate degree holders.

Dr. B.R. Ambedkar Institute of Social Science, under Bundelkhand University, Jhansi - 284 128, also offers MA Psychology.

The Institute of Human Behaviour and Allied Science, an autonomous body, in Delhi conducts M.Phil. clinical psychology. Eligibility is MA/M.Sc. psychology/applied psychology with minimum 55 per cent marks.

Some of the medical colleges conduct diploma-level clinical psychology courses for MBBS degree holders.

Father Muller Medical College, Kankanady, Mangalore, affiliated to the Rajiv Gandhi University of Health Sciences, offers M.Sc. psychosocial rehabilitation course. Graduates with psychology/social work/sociology/home science/nursing or behavioural and social science with 50 per cent marks are eligible for admission.

The National Institute of Mental Health and Neuro Science, Bangalore, offers M.Phil and Ph.D. courses in clinical psychology. Master's degree holders with high marks (not less the 55 per cent) are eligible for admission.

The Central Institute of Psychiatry, Ranchi, has an M. Phil programme in medical and social psychology of two years duration. Eligibility is MA/M.Sc. in psychology with 50 per cent marks in the aggregate. It also offers Ph.D. in clinical psychology of three years duration for MA psychology degree holders.

Guidance and counselling are an important area of practical application of psychology. Counselling is the process of helping an individual, discover and develop his educational, vocational and psychological potential, determined by psychological tests.

The National Council of Educational Research and Training, New Delhi, offers post-graduate diploma in guidance and counselling. Eligibility is master's degree in psychology of education with 55 per cent marks.

The Regional Institutes of Education, Mysore and Bhopal, functioning under NCERT, also conduct a one-year (two-semester) post-graduate diploma course in guidance and counselling. Admission is open to MA/M.Sc. psychology/ educational psychology/ social works/ child development/ human development holders.

The Madras School of Social Work, the Department of Counselling and Guidance, Chennai, affiliated to the University of Madras, offers M.Sc. counselling and guidance/ advanced organisational behaviour (self-financing). Any graduate who has studied at least one paper in psychology is eligible for admission.

Mother Teresa Women's University, Kodaikanal, offers MA in guidance and counselling. Graduates with psychology as a subject are eligible for admission.

Those who desire to go for Ph.D., should clear the Junior Research Fellowship/Lectureship examination conducted by the National Eligibility Test of the University Grants Commission or university-level examination.

Teaching and research are two major avenues of employment for the qualified psychologists. Clinical psychologists can find jobs in mental health hospitals/ clinics and also be involved in private practice as a consultant psychologist/ counsellor.

Forestry and wood technology

Q: On behalf of the Forestry Students Association, Sir Syed College (Kannur University) Taliparamba, I seek information on the scope of the B.Sc. forestry (three-year duration) course. I request you to provide details of institutions in India offering similar courses and about job opportunities for forestry graduates. - T. V. Sreejith, Taliparamba

A. B.Sc. forestry offered by the Kerala Agricultural University is a professional degree course of four-year duration. BSc. forestry and wood technology course of three years' duration offered by Kannur University is not equivalent to the above professional B.Sc. forestry degree course.

Just like any other science discipline, after successful completion of the three-year B.Sc. degree, you can go for higher studies or try for a job.

The Indian Institute of Forest Management (IIFM) Bhopal, an antonomous institution under the Union Ministry of Environment and Forests, has now emerged as a major educational training and research centre in the field of forestry management.

It was set up to provide managerial training to the existing and future forest officers as also to provide managerial manpower in forestry related fields.

The IIFM's post-graduate programme in forestry management (recognized as equivalent to master's degree) is one of the best higher study options for you. Minimum eligibility prescribed for admission to this course is three-year bachelor's degree or equivalent in any discipline. Students appearing for their final graduation examination are also eligible to apply. Selection is based on IIM - CAT score, group discussion and interview.

Short-listed applicants on the basis of the CAT score will be called for a group discussion and interview at IIFM Bhopal. A monthly stipend will be provided to all students admitted to the course.

The admission notification can be expected during August every year. The institute assists in the placement of successful graduates in forest-based industries and similar organisations.

Since wildlife and forests go together, a forest officer is also trained in wildlife management. The Forest Research Institute meets the demand for trained-manpower and research for many of the wildlife parks and conservation areas in the country.

Forest Research Institute, Dehradun, offers the following courses.

M.Sc. forestry (economics and management): Eligibility is three-year bachelor's degree in science with at least one of the following subjects: botany, chemistry, geology, mathematics, physics, zoology or bachelor's degree in agriculture or forestry.

M.Sc. wood science and technology: Eligibility is three-year bachelor's degree with physics, mathematics and chemistry or B.Sc. degree in forestry

M.Sc. environment management: Eligibility is three-year bachelor's degree in any branch of basic or applied science or bachelors degree in forestry or agriculture or BE in environment science.

Applicants should have obtained 50 per cent or above marks in qualifying examination (SC/ST students, 45 per cent). Admission test will be conducted at Dehradun, Jabalpur, Bangalore, Kolkata, Chandigarh, Delhi, Luchnow, Jodhpur, Shimla, Ranchi, Coimbatore, Jorhat.

Admission notification can be expected during March every year.

Guru Ghasidas University, Bilaspur, offers an M.Sc. forestry wildlife and environmental science four-semester course. Graduates in science with 50 per cent marks aggregate are eligible for admission.

As for a forestry-related career, the Indian Forest Service (IFS) is involved in the management of forests and wildlife at the national level.

IFS is a Central Government service for which a selection test is conducted by the Union Public Service Commission, New Delhi, annually.

This examination is open to the graduates with at least one of the subjects such as animal husbandry and veterinary science, botany, chemistry, geology, mathematics, physics, statistics and zoology or a degree in agriculture/ forestry or engineering of a recognised university.

Age limit: between 21 and 30 years. Candidates appearing for the final degree examination also eligible to compete.

The next IFS Examination commences on July 9, 2005 (10-day examination). Notification will appear in all leading dailies and Employment News.

The Kerala Forest Department appoints trainee forest rangers through Kerala Public Service Commission. Graduates in science of recognised university are eligible. Minimum physical standard prescribed for men - chest 84 cm to 89 cm, height - 163 cm.

For women - chest 79 cm to 84 cm, height - 150 cm. Selected trainees should undergo forest rangers course.

On absorption as rangers, Scale of pay will be Rs. 6,675-Rs. 10,550. Vacancies will be filled as and when they arise.
