Higher study options in anthropology
Q. I am a graduate diploma holder in fashion design. I would like to have information about higher study options in anthropology (preferably in Kerala).
- T.S. Girish, Kochi
A. First, you should ensure that your graduate diploma in fashion designing in recognized as an equivalent to a bachelor's degree in any other discipline by the University you have chosen for your study of anthropology at the master's degree level. If your present qualification is recognised as equivalent to a bachelor's degree, you can purse higher studies in anthropology.
Anthropology is mainly the study of the origin and evolutionary development of human beings.
Anthropology is offered both under the Arts and Science faculties. At the post-graduate level, MA and M.Sc. courses are available in anthropology. Some of the specialised branches in this field are Physical Anthropology, Archaeological Anthropology, Socio-cultural Anthropology, Linguistics Anthropology, Applied Anthropology, etc.
The power of observation, an analytical approach, research orientation and language proficiency are pre-requisites for studying anthropology at the higher level. Students should have interest in history and sociology.
In Kerala, the Department of Anthropology under Kannur University offers a MA course in Anthropology. The intake is 12 seats. Any bachelor's degree holder of Kannur University or those with qualifications recognised as equivalent by the University with 45 per cent marks in aggregate are eligible for admission. M.Phil. and Ph.D. study facilities are also available.
The School of Social Sciences under Mahatma Gandhi University, Kottayam, also offers an MA Anthropology course. The eligibility is a degree in Social Science with 45 per cent marks in part III. A M.Phil. course in Anthropology is also available here. Those with a master's degree in Social Science with not less than 55 per cent marks are eligible for admission to the M.Phil. programme.
Some other Universities offering Anthropology at the post-graduate level are:
Sri Venkateswara University, Tirupati - 517 502, AP - M.Sc. Anthropology (two years)
University of Delhi, Delhi - 110 007 - M.Sc. Anthropology

Anthropologists get job opportunities in projects taken up by museums and Universities involving archaeological investigation, biological evolutionary studies and other research areas including languages. International organisations like WHO, U.N. volunteer programmes and some Non-Governmental Organisations (NGOs) involved in tribal development, etc., also provide job opportunities to anthropologists. The Anthropological Survey of India, Kolkata, employs trained anthropologists as and when required.
