What are career prospects for graduates in nanotechnology and geomatics?

NANOTECHNOLOGY IS the science of understanding the structure and behaviour of materials at atomic or molecular level. Nanotechnology is an emerging field across the globe. Graduates in the field can become entrepreneurs or work as management and investment advisers in biotechnology and research and development industry; carry out research and development in Government organisations, universities and private research institutes; join as faculty in educational institutes; do research and consulting in industries like pharmaceutical, medical, agriculture, food and beverage, environmental industries; etc. They can engage themselves in product development and advising; communication and media.

What about geomatics?

Geomatics graduates acquire the necessary competence and ability to work in the sectors of environmental management, territorial development, civil engineering and public works. A geomatics specialist is appreciated in many branches of industry and is integrated in space industry, consulting companies that deal with spatial management, civil engineering firms, companies involved in development of geomatics software, research centres and institutes. Graduates of geomatics find employment in private and public mapping and engineering organisations, planning and architectural firms, GIS and LIS consultancies, Government agencies and utilities companies. Graduates with skills in satellite techniques are also in demand.


Biomedical engineering scenario

Which M.Tech colleges offer biomedical engineering in India and abroad? What are the job opportunities?

In India biomedical engineering course is available at the masters and doctoral levels at IIT Mumbai. Banaras Hindu University, Varanasi 221005 (Uttar Pradesh) and Birla Institute of Technology and Science, Vidya Vihar, Pilani 333031 (Rajasthan), offer M.Tech in biomedical engineering.

Overseas universities offering this stream are: Keele University, Staffordshire; University of Dundee; University of Surrey Guilford; University of New South Wales, Sydney; University of Melbourne; Kings College, London; Imperial College, London; University of Tubingen, Tubingern, Germany; University College Dublin, Ireland; and University of Strathyclyde, Glascow, Scotland.

The chief specialities in this field are: bioinstrumentation, biomaterials, biomechanics and cellular, tissue and genetic engineering; clinical engineering; rehabilitation engineering; orthopaedic surgery; medical imaging; and systems physiology. Biomedical engineering graduates can look forward to an exciting career in medical and healthcare sectors providing R&D services, direct engineering support as well as taking up sales and marketing. They can carry out maintenance and service work to ensure smooth operation of hospital equipment. Opportunities exist in teaching and training the end user on the use and care of the equipment. They can work as independent advisers and consultants as well.
