IFIM: B-school with a difference
|
The faculty regularly interact with professionals and seek practical solutions to corporate issues.

SOME ISSUES ago, we wrote about the proliferation of management institutes across the country. Some exceptionally good, many also-rans and several out to make a quick buck.
The aspiring managers, barring those joining the elite institutions, have been a little confused on the institution\career choice. Adding to this confusion has been the plethora of coaching institutes. In other words, the aspiring managers have to fend for themselves with little support from the faculty, peer group and parents.
There are exceptions. We have written about some management institutions (not the IIMs) which have been making significant contributions to the dynamics of management education itself. For instance, how the Mahaver Academy of Technological Sciences, Bangalore, runs its incubation programmes for its management students; how the twinning programme of the Ohio-Manipal Business School gives a global perspective.
Aand now, we have the Institute of Finance and International Management (IFIM) which, through its mentoring programme, prepares the students to face the world confidently.
PG diploma
In a short span of a decade, IFIM has emerged as a leading centre of management education, research and consultancy. Rated 47th in the country amongst management schools and eighth with regard to foreign placements, IFIM has been offering a full-time Post-Graduate Diploma in Business Management (PGDBM) with a difference.
The face of the management student here takes on that of a confident and communicative optimist who sees business opportunities entwined in Indian ethos, while looking globally.
IFIM's mission statement has been to "develop global leaders for pursuing excellence in management." Over 500 students have passed out and are working in flagship companies of both Indian origin and multi-national corporations.
The PGDBM programme, recognised by the All-India Council for Technical Education and the Association of Indian Universities as equivalent to an MBA degree, speaks of the strides the institute has made since its inception in 1995.
IFIM's teaching methodology has been appreciated in the industry circles and it is based on recognised worldwide principles. It believes in giving students a wide exposure by inviting guest faculty, case studies, role-plays and, above all, the mentoring programme.
The USP
The institute moulds the student through constant interaction with people who have attained a level of success and stature. The reciprocal nature of the learning-teaching process has become the unique selling proposition of IFIM.
Another key element that gives IFIM B-school an edge over the others is its approach towards building knowledge base and the way it imparts the same. Distinguished IFIM school faculty constantly interact with industry professionals to get a bird's eye view of the challenges, problems, opportunities faced by various industries and its professionals at large and then use their research skills to find practical solutions to the corporate issues.
The subsequent reservoir of knowledge is passed on to the students through journals and case studies published by the faculty. States R.K. Vijayasarathy, Director, IFIM, "management is a science which keeps re-inventing itself with times; with liberalisation and globalisation, it has become a field of paramount importance."
To put it simply, the word "management" is a summation of three words: man + age+ meant - which means it is an art of making a man realise what he is meant for in this corporate age.
