Laurels to Nalanda student
* D. SIRISHA Priyadarsini, a student of Nalanda Degree College NSS unit, Vijayawada, won the first prize in classical dance at the university level NSS (National Service Scheme) Youth Festival competitions, which were organised on Nagarjuna University premises on February 8. Priyadarsini's solo dance performance impressed the audience and won the appreciation of dignitaries. The Nagarjuna University NSS Unit Coordinator, Z. Vishnu Vardhan, said that it was decided to send Priyadarsini to participate in the State-level NSS youth festival competitions to be organised on the Osmania University campus soon.
Seminar on Annamayya
* THE TELUGU and History departments of Sri Durga Malleswara Siddhartha Mahila Kalasala and the Annamayya Project of Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanams jointly organised a three-day National Seminar on "Tallapaka (Annamayya) poets: Literature and historical aspects" here from February 7 to 9. Students of the kalasala had glimpses of saint-poet Annamacharya's contribution to development of different traditions at Tirumala temple. The Annamayya Project Director, Medasani Mohan, the former professor of Sri Venkateswara University, K. Sarvottama Rao, and other scholars delivered lectures on different aspects of Annamayya's "sankeertans".
Bala Mela for poor
* SANJEEVAN NIWAS, Andhra Loyola College, organised a mega event called "Bala Mela 2005" for poor and physically challenged children drawn from different localities in the city on Wednesday. The Jesuit Brothers, inmates of Sanjeevan Niwas, who were pursuing their higher studies at Andhra Loyola College, conducted special programmes for boosting morale of the underprivileged children. The skit called "Marpu" (change) was performed by the street children of Deepa Niwas.
Lecture on democracy
* THE ECONOMICS Association of the P.B. Siddhartha College of Arts and Science organised a lecture on "The changing face of Indian democracy" by Javeed Alam, professor of European Studies at Central Institute of English and Foreign Languages (CIEFL) on Friday. The Siddhartha College vice-principal, M. Rama Krishna, the Academic Officer, N. Satyanarayana, other faculty and students were present.
Clarion call to students
* UNDER THE College Talk AIDS programme, the Andhra Christian College of Law organised a seminar-cum-workshop on the campus on Friday and Saturday, at which the Assistant Collector, A. Babu, gave a call to the students to work towards creation of an AIDS-free society. Guntur district being one of the worst-affected in the country with high percentage of AIDS patients needs a coordinated plan of action to introduce health education from school-level, he said. The College Principal, Annie John, presided.
Focus on water shortage
* REASEARCH IN universities must concentrate on reducing the water shortage in the country, the Acharya Nagarjuna University Vice-Chancellor, L. Venugopala Reddy, told students at a workshop on `Water Quality Monitoring Survey and reporting' organised by the Environmental Sciences department. The APPCB Joint Chief Environmental Engineer, A. Arun Kumar, stressed on the need for giving prominence to conserving the precious commodity.
MBA students' gesture
* A TEAM of MBA students from the ICFAI National College, Vijayawada, distributed blankets and clothes to tsunami victims at Malakaya Lanka located near Machilipatnam on Thursday. The students - Sasidhar, Vasudeva Rao, Shyam, Mallik and Nagaraju - led by the ICFAI administrative officer, V. Balakrishna, visited the village.
Helping tsunami-hit
* STUDENTS, MANAGEMENT and staff of Tellakula Jalyya Polisetty Somasundaram College contributed Rs.2 lakhs towards the tsunami relief fund of the Chief Minister.
The College Correspondent, T. Srinivasa Babu, said that the cheque was handed over to the Collector, G. Jayalakshmi, and the non-teaching staff of the college distributed clothes valued at Rs.10,000 to victims in Prakasam district. Acharya Nagarjuna University M.A. Sociology students contributed Rs.11,000 towards the Chief Minister's Relief Fund.
