"Fly-by-night operators in the field of education...are on the prowl everywhere."

A riot of colours. — AP

I am at present doing my B.E. (ECE second semester) in Bangalore. I would like to know whether it is beneficial to do MBA after my B.E. or pursue M.E./M.S./M.Tech. Please clarify. I'm in a dilemma.

— Shreekar Sharman

All students face obstacles while pursuing a programme or a course. But then, it is your intuition and proper planning that will take you through and help in your career. After having decided to take up a career in Engineering, you must have also decided to focus on a few aspects as a career for sure.

Once at the crossroads, we tend to lose out because of too many suggestions and advices that we may have to grapple with. If you could pursue an MBA from the IIMs, you could surely be in the top echelons within no time. Pursuing the same from any second rung institute may put you in a spot.

As a HR Manager pointed out once, too many people become "unqualified" by pursuing post-graduate qualifications when the basic requirement is just graduation. In one instance, a candidate for a job did not reveal his PG qualification for fear of losing out on the job front. One completion of graduation, you should try to join a good company and charter your career after focussing on the needs and requirements that are changing every day.

Most companies offer to the associates training programmes; they also have a tie-up with universities and institutes from where the associates can pursue programmes that suit the interest of the organisation.

This is bound to help the associate, who will surely benefit in the long run. In fact, many have chartered qualitative careers on joining companies after completion of studies (basic degree).

While doing my final B.Com (June 2000), I came across an advertisement about a six-month course in e-commerce which also guaranteed a job. I fell for this and quit college, after having decided to complete my final year through correspondence.

Three months down the line, I did not know what struck me. I had been taken for a ride along with 10 other candidates. This institute closed down. Nevertheless, I completed my B.Com with an aggregate of 57 per cent and waited for that particular course which could offer me a job, on completing it. But I was wary after my first experience.

I joined a call centre to clear the bank loan (Rs.60,000) which I had availed for the e-commerce course and at the same time, started preparing for CAT. I could not get through CAT due to lack of preparation (was able to spare only two hours everyday). I quit the call centre after eight months and then joined ICFAI (2004) to do the CFA course (2 years).

In the preliminary exams, I scored 92 per cent. The first year's final exams are in April and I am preparing well. Since the last four months, I am working for a BPO.

My goal is MBA (Finance) from IIMB. I can now spare six hours everyday for studies. I am ready to struggle. How do I go about preparing for CAT? I request you to guide me. — Vivek

Fly-by-night operators in the field of education, whose only aim is to make a fast buck, are on the prowl everywhere. All students have to beware of such elements and make sure that they do not fall a prey to such companies that promise much but fail to deliver.

It is good to see to that you did not lose out, despite the obstacles faced. You have stood the test of time and come out successfully.

The CFA should definitely help you augment your qualification. Your ability to withstand the pressure from external forces is worth noticing. There are umpteen coaching centres which cater to the needs and requirements of the common admission test of the IIMs. You should go by the institutes' reputation to train students in a manner conducive for the said examination.

In fact, many refer to this examination as the mother of all examinations. For the CAT, you should plan well and concentrate. One should not take up the examination for the sake of taking it up, as the level of competition is very high. You will be competing with engineers and students from other faculties who would have worked hard towards a similar goal. You will have to devote all your time to it.
