Hi-tech security on offer

Protecting software technology is vital for every organisation.

Is all the information protected?

BEHIND EVERY scientific breakthrough, infrastructure has always played a key role. The same is true for technology. In the past several decades, technology has grown several-fold.

In the last decade alone, millions of jobs have been created in software and internet-related industries. Even the brick-and-mortar industries have a significant web presence today.

These factors have resulted in opportunities for professionals in different areas in technology infrastructure design, configuration, support and security. It is apparent from the fact that millions of Indians are working in technology-related jobs.

As technology infrastructure becomes more and more complex, organisations move on to the internet to expand and grow. As the number of financial transactions over the internet increases, safeguarding intellectual property and proprietary information becomes paramount for the survival of institutions.

Security is becoming the prime concern of everyone. The leading vendors for security products are Checkpoint Software, Cisco Systems, Computer Associates, Network Associates, Baltimore, and RSA Security. Says Ajay Pandey, Managing Director, Top Gun Technologies: "Checkpoint Software (CCSA/CCSE), Cisco Systems (CCIP) and International Information Systems Security Certifications Consortium (CISSP) offer the most respected certifications in the security area. Security involves using hardware, software and policies to protect the technology environment of an organisation. The knowledge needed to maintain a safe environment requires in-depth understanding of the environment in terms of hardware, software and applications that need to be protected".

Mr. Ajay Pandey has been in the network infrastructure area for several years. He has worked with Deloitte Consulting in the U.S. as an IT Strategy consultant and with Lucent Worldwide Services and as a Network/Security Consultant providing solutions to Fortune 100 companies.

Two certifications

Mr. Ajay says: "Checkpoint Software enjoys market leadership in the global firewall market. They offer two levels of general certifications on their firewall product, Checkpoint NG. These are:

* Checkpoint Certified Security Administrator (CCSA): This certification covers installation and configuration of basic features of the firewall.

* Checkpoint Certified Security Engineer (CCSE): This certification covers advanced firewall features including high-availability and VPN configuration".

Cisco Systems offers CCIP (Cisco Certified Internetwork Professional) with specialisation in Security. Cisco offers security features built into the IOS software or hardware PIX firewall. This certification covers the following:

* Managing Cisco Network Security (MCNS): This introduces the audience to fundamental security issues and threats and ways to protect the networks against these threats. The configuration of the Cisco Internetwork Operating System (IOS) to implement these features is also covered.

* Cisco Secure PIX Firewall Advanced (CSPFA): This covers the configuration of advanced security features using Cisco PIX firewall.

* Virtual Private Network (VPN): This covers installation and configuration of secure VPNs using Cisco products such as PIX, VPN Concentrators and routers.

* Intrusion Detection Systems (IDS): This covers installation and configuration of IDS using Cisco products.

According to Mr. Ajay, "Careers in technology infrastructure can be broken down into broad areas such as Networking Engineers (CCIE R&S) and Security Specialists (CCIE Security). These professionals are hired by the leading software companies in India. About 90 per cent of the professionals are placed in companies abroad."

Speaking about the training facilities available at the institute, he says, "The training programmes have been carefully developed to provide an optimum learning environment and also maintain the industry standards. We have highly qualified engineers /consultants with several years of experience in the industry and numerous industry certifications. They bring real-world experience to the classroom.

"We offer hands-on, instructor-led courses such as Cisco's Associate and Professional-Level certifications in our state-of-the-art Cisco Laboratory. We also offer courses in Optical Networking, Wireless Networking and Voice over IP (VoIP) and Storage Area Networks. Our institute provides e time for students to practice new concepts. We offer training leading to Check Point's CCSA/CCSE certifications on CP-NG/VPN-1.
