BLAME IT on the ever-growing industrialisation or massive urbanisation, risks of fire accidents have increased. But in this adversity, lay greater opportunities for youngsters looking for a challenging career. But very few institutions train professional fire officers. College of Fire Technology (CFT), affiliated to Gujarat University, is the only institution offering a B.Sc (Fire) degree.

The course concentrates on disaster management with stress on fire disasters. "There is only one other institute in Nagpur that offers a B.E. degree in fire services for graduates," says Gnanesh R. Bhagat of CFT, located near Ahmedabad.

The college -- spread over 50 acres -- admits 60 students for the three-year course on first come first serve basis.

What's the eligibility

"Pursuing a PG course in fire technology is the easiest way to go abroad for a student". Gnahesh R. Bhagat, CFT.

A pass in the Intermediate with science and maths subjects is a must and eligible candidates go through an interview and a medical examination before getting admitted. Mr. Bhagat says students are trained to be leaders in fire-fighting services apart from other natural disasters. "Last year the placement was 100 per cent," he observes.

Stress is laid on practical training as students undergo a three-month practical training by attachment with Government sectors in fire brigades and private organisations in their fire and safety departments. The college has set up a placement centre to assist students. Placement talks and campus interviews are arranged for students.

Career opportunities

The career starts from junior fire officer level in Government, semi-Government or big industrial enterprises, defence, railways, airports, electricity boards, CISF, ONGC, mines, refineries, petrochemical complexes, etc. Private sector like Reliance, Grasim, HLL, Telco, petroleum companies, automobiles and car companies also offer jobs. Students have tremendous opportunities to carry out business in specialised fields like fire surveyor in the insurance sector, fire consultants, risk management consultancy, setting up a business of fire protection and manufacturing fire equipment, safety equipments, installation of fire detection and suppression system.

Fire professionals are sought after in foreign countries. A degree holder can pursue higher education in the field and several universities in the US and Europe offer PG courses in fire technology and fire engineering. Information can be had on www.collegeoffiretechnology.com.
