Does heart matter in nanotech age?

IN THE nanotech age, who has time for the chronicles of the heart? Eight budding litterateurs from LRG Government Arts College for Women, Tirupur, S.Mallika, R. Vidhyarathi, S.Banupriya, N. Sasikala, P.Prabhavathy, A.Reshma, P.Anuradha and S. Kumudha show the way.

S.Mallika:"Literature helps me understand everything in life.'

R. Vidhyarathi: "This is the only field which touches the soul and leaves our hearts with peace and delight."

S.Banupriya : "It helps me face the world with courage"

N. Sasikala: "It is a subject that has to be enjoyed and experienced and not studied".

P.Prabhavathy: "It helps in moulding a good character".

A.Reshma: "Literature helps me to be creative"

P.Anuradha: "I learn about the culture and traditions of our nation"

S. Kumudha: "I am able to understand human feelings which are portrayed through various characters"

Sasikala: "The realities of life are portrayed in Literature. Othello, a character from a Shakespearean play, had a great fall because of his jealousy and Macbeth because of over ambition."

Prabhavathy: "Nowadays in the global world, good communications skills are a basic requirement in any field. Language provides the solutions."

Banupriya: Aristotle says, `the purpose of Literature is to instruct and delight'. It is life's record, life's reflection, and an analyzer of life. Through the various characters and the situations they deal with in comedies and tragedies, we learn how to refine our character. Poetry, some one says, is experiencing the presence of God."

Kumudha: "Imagination gets shape through literature. The poet, Bharathiar, began enjoying and experiencing life in a free nation even before Independence."

Prabhavathy: "Through dramas and theatre we can highlight social evils like child labour and environmental pollution, which even the layman can understand. In a film a theatre group performs street plays to reveal double-faced politicians."

Anuradha: "It helps us compare and contrast the present and the future, it helps to communicate, and also develops a service mentality."

Reshma: "It provides a different perspective to any situation. When a scientist tastes honey, he wants to know from where it originates and what is its composition. But for a student of literature, what matters is the taste."

Vidhyarathi: " `Wings of Fire' by our President and Books by Gandhiji have inspired millions. In `Silas Marner' by George Eliot, the main character, gets dejected after his gold coins have been stolen, but the next day he finds love and draws confidence. Through their relationships, we learn."

S.Mallika: "Thirukkural touches everything...... values, money and love. How we should behave or how we should not behave be and how not is portrayed through the characters of Ramayana and Mahabharatha".

Prabhavathy: In a book, `He conquered the Jungle', which has been translated into 16 languages by K.Seva Reddy, an Andhra writer, we see how an old man struggles, but does not give up. A line in the book inspires me always, it is "life is full of strange contradictions and despair is not a matter for any achiever."

Sasikala: "When a man is sad, he reads and listens to songs. It is the words in the song or book which have an impact on him."

Prabhavathy (wants to enter mass communications): "There are careers too. You can get into advertising and marketing."

Vidhyarathi (wants to become a lecturer): "Masters of Social Work is another option."

Sasikala (Another budding lecturer): "Writers of novels and drama also come from literature".

Anuradha (too wants to make it to teaching): "As more people are opting for Sciences, there is a great demand for Tamil literature students".

S.Mallika: Yes, in Singapore too, Tamil teachers are in demand". (She is a budding lecturer too).

N. Sasikala: Call centres and the IT field are options too.

Banupriya: `I would like to become a psychologist".

Anurandha: Maths is a also a truth and so is literature, but while there is proof for Maths, experience is the evidence for literature."
