REALISING THE need to modernise the plantation sector through management education and training, the Central Ministry of Commerce set up an institution for implementing this requirement. It was registered as an autonomous institution of higher learning in 1993 - The Indian Institute of Plantation Management, Jnana Bharathi Campus, P.O. Malathalli, Bangalore - 560 056; Ph: 080- 080-2321 2767; e-mail: info@iipmb.com.

The institute is jointly sponsored by the plantation sector and the commodity boards such as Coffee Board, Tea Board, Rubber Board, Spices Board, and the plantation associations, United Planters' Association of Southern India and Indian Tea Association.

West meets East

A cardinal feature of the institution is that it effectively blends Western approaches with Eastern insights. The `reach-out' model of the institute helps in establishing close links with the corporate and grassroots institutions in the sector.

Flagship

The flagship programme of the institute is the 15-month postgraduate diploma in agri business and plantation management (PGD-ABPM). It envisages management education to the entrants in the agri-business and plantation sector, so as to enable them to meet even global competition. Participants of the programme are exposed to the state-of-the-art developments in cyber-revolution as well.

Admission

Admission to the programme can be sought in two categories - Open category and the Sponsored category.

Those who have a university degree in any discipline with 50 per cent marks are eligible to apply for admission to the programme. Candidates appearing in final-year examination this year will also be considered.

Selection

Graduates in agriculture and allied disciplines should appear for the computer-based objective test (CBOT) to be conducted by MANAGE (National Institute of Agricultural Extension Management, Rajendranagar, Hyderabad - 500 030, in May 2005. (Details at website: www.manage.gov.in; )

Graduates in other disciplines can apply with MAT/XAT scores.

Foreign students will be admitted under the open or sponsored category. They may submit GMAT or any equivalent scores. Foreign students should be well versed in English language. TOEFL scores would be accepted as an indicator of language proficiency.

In the case of the sponsored candidates, weightage will be given for their experience. There are five categories of sponsorship:

Plantation companies and agri-business corporates

Plantation owners

Central and State Governments

International agencies and SAARC countries

NRIs and PIOs

Application form

To obtain the prospectus and application form by post, send a crossed demand draft for Rs.700 drawn in favour of `Indian Institute of Plantation Management,' payable at Bangalore.

The application form can also be downloaded from the institute's website and filled-in application form along with application fee may be sent in the name of the director. The forms duly filled in will be accepted till April 16.

Fees

The institutional fee for the programme is Rs.1, 25,000 that may be paid to the institute by the candidate/or the sponsor. Candidates admitted under the open category can pay the fee in two instalments.

The fee for international candidates and candidates sponsored by NRI's / PIO's is $8,000. This does not include the mess charges, expenses on books and reading material, computer usage charges, hostel rent, expenses on field visits and other personal expenses.

The institute facilitates educational loan from banks to the candidates admitted to the programme.

Placement

The institute offers placement advisory services and assistance through its placement cell.

The alumni of the institute are attached to organisations such as Hindustan Lever Limited, A.V. Thomas Group of Companies, Godrej Agrovet Limited, Parry Agro Industries Limited, Pfizer Limited and Tata Tea Limited.

Research

The Indian Institute of Plantation Management has a strong research focus on policy, managerial, and operational issues. It undertakes research projects in frontier areas of concern at the industry, national, and global levels.

Its short-term executive programmes (STEPs) are tailor-made for the professionals in the plantation industry. Those who have a university degree in any discipline with 50 per cent marks are eligible to apply for admission to the programme. Candidates appearing for the final year examination this year will also be considered.

They are much more than routine programmes in the sense that they serve in different dimensions such as:

Mutual learning forums

Sources of motivational

inputs

Diagnostic problem-solving labs.
