THE GOVERNMENT Industrial Training Institute, Tiruchi, made a humble beginning with a noble objective of providing vocational training to those who turned dropouts from the regular stream of education so as to empower them with specific skills and make them employable.

Today, the institute is not an asylum for dropouts but has proved to be a primary centre for students longing for a career of promising prospects, both inland and abroad.

The ITI was started in 1962 under the then `Craftsman Training Scheme' of the Directorate of Employment and Training, with five vocational courses, including Fitter, Turner, Machinist and Grinder with an initial intake of 272 students.

The institute has since been on its road to growth in a phased manner and now offers 13 courses, handled by 97 teachers. The students' strength has increased to 808 including 58 girls.

The institute now boasts of its curricula in Machinist, Mechanics (Diesel), Welder and Computer Operator and Programming Assistant (COPA) — some of the much sought-after courses.

What sets this institute apart from other ITIs in the State is the job opportunities it provides in a chain of industries in Tiruchi, especially the Bharat Heavy Electrical Limited (BHEL) and the Ordnance Factory, Tiruchi (OFT).

The institute has been a catalyst in the career development of many welders, machinists and so on, currently employed in the BHEL, HAPP and in a few foreign firms in Malaysia, Singapore and the Far East. It is the galaxy of these well-employed personnel who have been inspiring students to join the institute.

Many youths have thus been encouraged to join the institute, thanks to the inter-personal communication they had with its alumnus.

That even students with high scores in the SSLC or Plus-Two public examinations prefer to join this institute bears enough testimony to the quality of vocational training it has been imparting to the architects of future India.

The institute has planned to start a two-year certificate course on `Mechanics — Mechetronics' during the next academic year with an intake of 18.

The availability of adequate infrastructure has been an added advantage to the institute. It has state-of-the art computers and a good number of jeeps and other four-wheelers to train the students of the respective branch.

The Tiruchi City Corporation has chosen this institute to impart short-term training to

53 youths in COPA and, 33 youths in light-vehicle driving. The COPA trainees would learn MS-Office, Excel, Power Point and so on, while the driver-trainees would learn various skills like operating the jeeps in narrow lanes and curves. The Corporation has allotted Rs. 1.72 lakhs under the `Swarna Jayanthi Urban Employment Scheme' for the purpose. The training will commence on the campus shortly.
