Interior designing is for the creatively inclined.

Interior Designing

Q: I have completed my Plus Two. What are my options for pursuing interior designing, particularly non-regular courses? I wish to become an architect. - Rekha.

A: Architecture involves a great deal of creative design skill. Interior designing goes beyond the technical aspects of architectural work. Interior designers should be creative, artistic and have good imagination, colour sense and sense of beauty. Interior designers work in close association with architects. In order to become an interior designer, one should study an interior designing course which covers areas such as basic building and structural systems, construction materials, design decor, layout-elevation, treatment of interiors, lighting colours, etc. Degree and Diploma level courses are available. Plus Two is the minimum entry qualification.

Some of the colleges/institutes offering interior designing and decoration/related courses are:

College of Interior Design and Decoration, Mangalore - 575 003 (B.Sc. interior design and decoration).

An aspiring architect should have design and drawing aptitude, numerical ability, artistic talent, creativity, technical competence and communication skills. At present, architecture makes use of computer-aided design and related technology.

Bachelor of Architecture is a professional five-year regular course followed by a compulsory six months training in an architectural firm as a part of the curriculum of studies. The entry qualification is a pass in 10+2/equivalent examination with 50 per cent marks in mathematics separately and 50 per cent marks in physics, chemistry and mathematics put together.

Admission is based on aptitude test in architecture. The Council of Architecture is the regulatory authority for courses in architecture. Qualified architects have to register themselves with the Council of Architecture to practice.

Instead of going to colleges, students can take an alternative route to become an architect. Students qualifying all the parts are awarded associate membership, which is a recognised qualification to work as an architect. Contact address: Indian Institute of Architects, Fort, Mumbai - 400 001.

Another alternative route without attending regular class is the Institution of Engineers (India). It provides facilities to obtain an AMIE membership in the architecture branch through private study.
