Career in merchant navy

I am very fascinated by merchant navy. Please tell me about the process involved in joining the field and also provide a list of the institutes offering the course.

Ramu Bhardwaj, Hyderabad

Merchant navy offers an adventurous and glamorous career. To meet the requirement of trained manpower, there are pre-sea and post-sea training institutes under the Directorate General of Shipping, Ministry of Surface Transport.

On successful completion of training at the institutes, candidates can take up jobs on board Indian/foreign vessels.

After Class XII (PCM), one can join a merchant navy training institute to pursue a three-year navigation or four-year engineering course. T S Chanakya, the Government training ship, recruits candidates for B Sc navigation course through the IIT JEE. The Marine Engineering and Research Institutes (MERI) selects candidates for marine engineering through the IIT JEE examination.

(i) Lal Bahadur Shastri (LBS) College of Advanced Maritime Studies & Research, Hay Bunder, Tank Road, Mumbai-400033 is one of the largest institutes in Asia in terms of the number of candidates it trains.

The institute offers post-sea training to marine officers of both deck and engine in 32 various courses; the training conforms to Standards for Training Certification and Watchkeeping (STCW') 95 standards.

It has the state-of-art training equipment and infrastructure facility to keep pace with changing trends in shipping industry.

(ii) Marine Engineering and Research Institutes (MERI), P-19 Taratola Road, Calcutta -700088/Hay Bunder, Tank Road, Mumbai-400033.

The institute at Calcutta with a capacity to train 120 students per year provides a four-year degree course in marine engineering. MERI, Mumbai, which also has capacity to turn over 120 students per year, provides a six-month course in Mechanical Engineering to candidates possessing degree in mechanical engineering prior to sailing on board.

Both the institutes are equipped with state-of-the-art, training equipment and facilities to meet the requirements of marine engineering training.

(iii) T. S. Chanakya, Karave Navi Mumbai-400706. The shore-based academy was earlier known as T. S. Dufferin and later as T. S. Rajendra.

The academy offers two types of courses:

A three-year degree course in Nautical Science; with an intake capacity of 80 cadets per course under the aegis of University of Mumbai; and

A three-month pre-sea training course with an intake capacity of 120 cadets per course.

Admission to MERI and T. S. Chanakya are through a joint entrance examination conducted by Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) at national level.

For the three-month pre-sea cadet course, the candidates have to be sponsored by various shipping companies.

For the six-month Trainee Mechanical Engineering course, candidates possessing degree in mechanical engineering have to be sponsored by shipping companies.

For post-sea training course at LBS College of Advanced Maritime Studies & Research, the marine officers themselves approach the institutes for updating their technical competency in accordance with the needs of STCW' 95 and other stipulations laid down by IMO and Government of India.

Apart from these, there are several recognised private institutes.

The Government has recognised various training institutes in the private sector to supplement the efforts made by the Government.

These training institutes are required to comply with the requirements specified in guidelines stipulated by the Government and are subject to inspection by the Directorate General of Shipping.

In the private sector, there are four establishments for rating training, six deck cadet training institutes and 27 training academies.

These training institutes provide pre-sea and post-sea training courses to various categories of ratings/cadets and marine officers in various fields.
