Making rapid strides

The Shrimati Indira Gandhi College (SIGC), which started as a self-financing institution in 1984 with a student strength of 112, nurturing the twin objectives of empowering women and making them financially independent, has taken rapid strides to grow to accommodate 5,274 students in various courses. Founded by academician K. Santhanam, the college offers bachelor degrees in computer science, computer applications, mathematics, physics, industrial economics, microbiology, biochemistry, information technology, fashion technology and costume designing, commerce, business administration, business management and economics.

The PG courses comprise MCA, MBA, M.Sc. Computer Science, M,Sc IT, M. Com, and MSW, besides M. Sc programmes in Microbiology, Biochemistry, Mathematics, Physics and Hospital Management. The evening college too offers most of the abovementioned programmes besides certificate courses in Data Entry Operation, Diploma in Yoga, Fashion Technology and Business Process Outsourcing, PGDCA, PG Diploma in e-Commerce, and PG Diploma in Bio-Informatics.

The library has a stock of about 25,000 books. The institution has 675 computers, 30 of them with Internet facility, and these are available round-the-clock for use by students and staff members.

The college also has various student support systems to ensure better performance in academics as well as job interviews.

The `Earn while you learn' scheme implemented by the college involves data conversion work for multinational companies. Its Book Bank benefits economically poor students, who are permitted to use the books free of cost for a year.

The Entrepreneurship Development Cell trains students in a range of activities such as doll making, craftwork, sewing, painting, beautician course and artificial flower making.

Students could take advantage of this knowledge and even earn a substantial income while still studying. Likewise, various kinds of pre-placement trainings are available through the Career Guidance Cell.

According to the principal, K. Meena, the institution has received the Chief Minister Dr. M.G. Ramachandran Endowment Award for the Best College for NSS activities, Vocational Excellence Award from the Rotary Club of Tiruchi, and Dr. Malcolm Adisheshiah Award from the State Resource Centre for Non-formal Education and Tamil Nadu Board of Continuing Education.
