PG course in Marine Studies

Under graduate students who are interested in pursuing a post-graduate course in marine and coastal studies now have an opportunity to take up a two-year regular course at Madurai Kamaraj University from this academic year.

The MKU is introducing a PG course, `Sub-Aqua Marine Ecology and Toxicogenomics,' under the innovative programmes of the University Grants Commission. It is offered under the Choice Based Credit System and comes under the UGC's programmes for teaching and research in inter-disciplinary and emerging areas.

The Centre for Marine and Coastal Studies of the university will introduce the course. According to A. K. Kumaraguru, Director, the significance of this innovative course lies in the fact that it incorporates socially and economically relevant subjects such as coral reef ecology, conservation and management, sub-aqua marine ecology, marine eco-toxicology, marine genomics, marine toxicogenomics, marine bio-active natural products, marine microbiology and socio-economics.

"Most of these subjects are innovative and emerging fields in the country," he says.

Eligibility

Candidates for this post-graduate regular course must have a bachelor degree in any branch of life sciences from a recognised Indian or foreign university. Students who are completing the UG course in April/May are also eligible to apply. Prospectus and application form can be downloaded from the Madurai Kamaraj University website — www.mkuniversity.org.

The prospectus/form can also be had by post on payment of Rs.650 (for SC-ST candidates it is Rs.50) in the form of demand draft drawn in favour of the Registrar, MKU, payable at Madurai. More details about the course can be had from the Centre for Marine and Coastal Studies, School of Energy, Environment and Natural Resources, Madurai Kamaraj University.

Last date for applying for admission to the course is May 25.
