VISION FOR RURAL INDIA: Speaking for the agri-sector.

Since the poor are predominant in rural areas and depend mainly on agriculture for their livelihood, achieving the goal of poverty reduction depends on growth of agriculture sector. To achieve a three per cent reduction rate of rural poverty, it is essential that the agriculture sector grows at four to five per cent per annum, said the Vice-Chancellor of Madurai Kamaraj University, P. Maruthamuthu.

Speaking at a two-day national seminar on `India 2020 - A vision for India's development, progress and prosperity' held recently under the aegis of the Centre for Dr. Zakir Hussain Studies of MKU, the Vice-Chancellor spoke on the employment scenario at the world level.

S. Muthukumaran, former Vice-Chancellor of Bharathidasan University and Member-Secretary, Tamil Nadu State Council for Higher Education, Chennai, presided over the seminar. Abdul Aziz, former professor and Head, Economics Unit, Institute for Social and Economic Change, Bangalore, gave the keynote address.
