Eventful year of service

VOLUNTEERS FROM all colleges in Coimbatore region participated in a special camp organised by the National Service Scheme (NSS) wing of Bharathiar University, the current academic year.
The programme coordinator, Prof. P. K. Manoharan, said that the University had also integrated 74 colleges spread over three districts for seminars on empowering youth against high risk behaviour and training programmes on value education in Tirupur, Erode, Pollachi, Udhagamandalam and Coimbatore.
"In appreciation of the activities of Bharathiar University," Prof. Manoharan said, "the Tamil Nadu NSS Cell has increased the number of NSS units by 50 per cent within two years.
"The total strength of the volunteers increased from 13,000 to 20,400."
At the pre-Republic Day parade camp for Southern Region, organised for the first time by a university in the State, there were 200 NSS volunteers including 100 women students from Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Karnataka and Pondicherry.
Of the 18 students selected from the State, six volunteers, including four women, were from Bharathiar University.
They participated in the Republic Day Parade 2005 in New Delhi.
The University brought out a Volunteers Work Diary, Programme Officers' NSS Handbook and All Colleges NSS Magazine, besides launching an NSS website.
All the NSS activities were aimed at developing patriotism, secularism, self-discipline, dignity of labour and leadership qualities.
Over 400 volunteers from 50 colleges exhibited their talent at `Gramiam-2005', a cultural festival featuring traditional Indian folk events. At the adopted villages, NSS volunteers conducted special coaching classes for academically weak students and trained young people to use computers and service electronic equipment.
At the college level, volunteers assisted in establishing legal aid clinics, consumer awareness clubs, eco clubs and forest fire squads.
