DO YOU use biodegradable materials instead of plastic or mosquito nets instead of repellents? Do you service your vehicle regularly to check pollution levels and keep it off the road once a week? If your answer to all of these is an emphatic `no' then your education is incomplete.

Since the Supreme Court's order making environmental studies compulsory for undergraduate students, the UGC and various universities have been working towards this objective. St. Joseph's College, Tiruchirrapalli, has taken the initiative to bring out a book, Environmental Studies that will serve as a text for students. After intensive training by both Bharathidasan University and the Anglade Institute of Natural History, Shenbaganur, the book was planned and executed by the college's Department of Botany.

It covers an entire gamut of issues including natural resources, ecosystems, biodiversity and its conservation, social issues, human population and the environment and pollution. According to the Principal, Fr. A.G. Leonard, SJ, the book "is an attempt to make the educated aware of the problems of the environment and enrich their own potentialities to face them."

"The chapters are presented taking the elementary knowledge of the reader into consideration and the Indian contextualisation adds impetus to easier grasping," says Dr. G. Melchias, Reader in Botany.

An informative reader for anyone concerned with the future of our planet, the book which is into its third edition is priced at Rs. 55 and may be acquired from the Principal, St. Joseph's College (Autonomous) Tiruchirrapalli - 620 002.
