E-PUBLISHING IS another emerging area on the business process outsourcing horizon.

For those who enjoy learning, this could be a good career destination.

The work involves converting raw manuscripts or written materials into a readable, grammatically correct and well-illustrated format. The finished product could be a book, a journal, a CD or a web page.

Nature of work

To understand the work process, take the example of Integra software Services, a Pondicherry based e-publishing company that specialises in editing Science books and journals.

It offers a wide range of services to its clients such as digital typesetting, E-publishing, copyediting, indexing, data conversion, image processing, project management of books, journal administration, multi-language typesetting, content management system, digital asset management (archiving), pre-media services, multi-media/ new media services, course management system and web publishing. "The e-publishing industry requires composers, proof readers, copy editors, graphic artists and software programmers," says Sriram Subramanya, Chairman and CEO of Integra Software Services. Production coordinators, production managers, project managers, team leaders, project management executives, customer service executives are also required.

For editors, an exceptional command over English (both oral and written) and strong subject knowledge is a must. Newgen Imaging requires content and technical editing specialists for which they prefer bright post-graduates with a science background and with exceptional command over the English language.

Computer skills and knowledge of foreign language/s will be an advantage.

For proofreading, good analytical skills and an eye for detail are required. Once again, Newgen Imaging prefers first class post-graduates in any discipline of science from a premier college/ university with excellent English language skills for its Chennai office.

Graduates/Postgraduates with fluency in English and with prior work experience and an eye for detail required for proofing and checking styles of Books /Journals.

Composers should be well versed in MS Office tools and operating systems while Graphic Artists should bring a basic knowledge of CorelDraw, PageMaker along with the ability to visualise.

Since a lot of work revolves around digital content, people with knowledge of HTML would find exciting career opportunities as data conversion and technical specialists.

Though freelancing has not picked up in the industry, some companies such as Newgen Imaging Systems Private Limited provide opportunities for freelancers too.

Mr. Subramanya says: "The salaries depend on the skill level of candidates, and for some roles the salaries start from Rs. 1 lakh per annum. In addition to this there are productivity linked incentives and also medical and social security benefits."
