RIGHT TURN

It's your call, your choice

With negative attitude and cynical thinking, one can't progress. Kick the defeatist blues and sail into a new environment

After summer vacations, it's time to step into a new classroom, new college and for those who completed their education, it is a new employment.

A person has to inevitably pass through many new environments during his lifetime. A child, after spending three years in his mother's safe hands, has to leave for his kindergarten school. A girl, after marriage, has to learn to live with totally strange people. A non-English medium school student faces entirely new culture when he joins a college. It is the same case with a newly-employed.

Sometimes, the unfamiliar work situations may lead to depression. There are many hidden factors also.

Undue influence

Unsatisfactory environment: Home sick on one side and ragging on the other play on your nervous. Students from higher `sect' pose as if they have landed from different world and are very special. You know that they are speaking English, but you can make nothing out of it. You try to make some friends of your choice. Some times your choice goes wrong. You find your new friend a negative thinker. You find that your friend is emotionally controlling you with his or her undue influence but you cannot come out of the clout. You will be shocked to see gossiping going around you and sometimes back stabbing also.

Blame: When people face problems in a new surrounding, they start blaming others for their performance. "It's in our family genes that we are not intelligent, my parents brought me like this and I cannot help," are some of the excuses they make. We find people blaming the country also for their misfortunes.

There is only one way to overcome the above constraints. You cannot change people, atmosphere and situations surrounding you. Then what to do? You change. Change makes life difficult for a while and causes initial stress. But it is an ongoing fact of life.

Self-change: Some people think that changing according to situation is a born gift. No. It is your choice. Your bullet-proof armour can be constructed by changing your three characteristics. 1.Your attitude 2.Your behaviour. 3.Your thinking.

The attitude change takes place personally from the `inside out'. Whether it's going to be a wonderful day or ugly day depends upon how you start thinking while waking up from your bed. Henry Ford correctly said, "If you think you can, and you think you can't, both are correct." Accept responsibility. You are responsible for what you are, what you have and what you do. Your logical thinking defuses the situation. You refuse to let a situation hook you. Never allow a friend to take you granted.

Your behaviour means your response to a stimulus. Control your emotions. Stay for a while before responding. Introspect and be conscious. Let your reaction be innovative and free from any undue influence or your weakness. Once you develop controlling your behaviour, your unconscious incompetence slowly evolves into three different stages, conscious incompetence, conscious competence and finally to unconscious competence which is the ultimate key to success. You are being ragged and in tears. Do you do the same thing when you become a senior and take sadistic revenge on some other innocent guy? Your thinking pattern keeps you always happy. Before you act, think: Is it true? Is it harmful? And finally is it necessary? Develop the habit of keeping promises, forgive people, keep open mind for a beneficial change and invite positive criticism. Your thoughts are converted into your words, actions land destiny. With a defeatist attitude, uncontrolled behaviour and cynical thinking, you can never have a positive day. With an affirmative attitude, restrained behaviour and constructive thinking, you can never have a bad day. Choice is yours. (courtesy: Staying positive)
