Right route for drug delivery
|
Among all, buccal route receives more attention as it is suitable for sustained release of formulations and retentive systems.

Buccal drug delivery is a promising area for research with the aim of systemic delivery of orally inefficient drugs as well as a feasible and attractive alternative for non-invasive delivery of potent peptide and protein drug molecule.
Buccal route offer distinct advantages like, bypass of hepatic first pass metabolism and avoidance of pre-systemic elimination within GI tract. Among the different transmucosal routes for drug delivery the buccal route received more attention because it is suitable for sustained release of formulations and retentive systems.
Different formulations like tablets, gels, patches, and ointments etc. can be prepared. For formulation of these dosage forms bio-adhesive (mucoadhesive) polymers are used to retain the dose at the site of absorption. These polymers could be natural polymers (Guar gum, hyaluronic acid, chitosan and Veegum etc.) or synthetic derivatives (PVP, Carbopol-934, polyurethanes, epoxy resins and polystyrene etc.). Apart from this penetration enhancers (polysorbate-80, sodium glycocholate and SLS etc.) are used to increase the bioavailability of drug.
Bukatel (Prochlorperazine), Nitrostat (Nitroglycerine), Striant (Testosterone) are a few of the marketed products. Further research is going on to prepare more effective, safe and economical buccal products by using suitable polymers and penetration enhancers.

Device in real time
The project deals with `Windows based Host system communicates with Real Time Embedded system on LAN in `client - server' configuration and the software implementation of real time operating system called vxWorks is running on Intel X86 -Microprocessor based real time data acquisition and processing system.
This Embedded Real Time system accepts the stream of converted digital information from various field sensors (e.g., thermocouples, and potential free contacts) in real time. This embedded system act as a master to I/O devices and keep acquiring the data from the field device in real time.
Windows `Java' - Graphical user interface based Host system is used to monitor the status of field I/O devices through the real time embedded system on regular based as when required. Host system acts like an interface between end user and embedded system.
Embedded system is acquiring the data from I/O device and reporting acquired data to host on request in Master slave configuration.
Some of the important functionality of real time embedded system module is:
To acquire and monitor various field devices
To control the field device
To communicate with Windows based host
