Sharpening the skills of students in the job market is the aim of the PES group
|
IN AN attempt to get its students to look beyond their textbooks, PES Institute of Technology is endeavouring to endow its students with the skills necessary to survive in the business world.
Under its Total Student Development Programme (TSDP), students are taught a variety of courses outside the prescribed syllabus, all aimed at making it easier for them to secure prime placements later on.
"This programme aims at bridging the gap between the skills taught by the colleges and the skills needed in the corporate world," says Jawahar Doreswamy, Director of People's Education Society (PES) institutions.
The programme spans 72 days, with 18 days of instruction in each year. In the first year, students are trained in "soft skills," including communication, presentation and a foreign language.
Over the second and third years, they are taught professional skills that are not part of the prescribed curriculum. In the fourth year, they are introduced to the intricacies of the business world with courses in business skills. Innovative measures include "Chanakya," a game which trains aspirants in decision-making by giving them situations and expecting them to come up with solutions.
