Rice mill technician course

WITH THE Indian economy predominantly based on agriculture, it is inevitable for the food processing industry to upgrade its technology regularly to sustain itself in the context of globalisation. This needs qualified technicians.

The Central Government has recognised food processing technology as a "sunrise industry.'' It is expected that approximately $ 5 billion will be invested in this sector in the near future.

Keeping these factors in view, the SKF Education Foundation (SKF), managed by SKF group of companies at Moodbidri in Dakshina Kannada, has begun a one-year "rice mill technician course'' at its Sri Kalikamba Industrial Training Institute (SKFITI). The course starts from August, 2005.

G. Ramakrishna Achar, Managing Director of SKF group of companies, said the SKFITI held a six-month rice mill technician job-oriented course from August, 2004 to January, 2005 for 23 students. All of them have been employed in rice mills in Chattisgarh, Sangli, Tumkur, Raichur, Nellore and other places. This year, it will be a one-year ITI course affiliated to the State Council of Vocational Training (SCVT) functioning under the National Council of Vocational Training (NCVT).

This is a two-semester scheme. The syllabus covers paddy processing technology, cultivation and purchase aspects, manufacturing of different types of rice mill machinery, their operation and maintenance, engineering drawing, workshop calculation and science and social studies.

The eligibility to join the course is pass in SSLC and candidates should be aged between 17 years and 40 years. The institute has a hostel at Moodbidri.

Students will be provided training in different aspects of production of grains and marketing by experts in the field. The institute has tied up with major manufacturers, industrialists and institutions. After completing the course, the students can work as rice mill supervisors, technicians, purchase managers and maintenance technicians. They can also get into allied industries such as breweries and sugar factories.

Mr.Achar said there are 67,000 rice mills in India, with 11,000 in Andhra Pradesh, 3,800 in Karnataka, 15,000 in Punjab and Haryana and about 12,000 in Uttar Pradesh and Chattisgarh. They face dearth of skilled rice mill technicians.

Including rice mills, there are about two lakh food processing mills in India. They are in the process of modernising their technology to keep pace with the global trend. The industry needs about 50,000 mill technicians to plug the losses and increase efficiency.

Details of the course could be had on 08258-261291, 261292. Address of the institute: Sri Kalikamba Industrial Training Institute, Bannadka, Moodbidri, Dakshina Kannada. Pin: 574213.
