A helping hand in Hubli

CONSIDERING THE fact that it was the maiden attempt in northern Karnataka, The Hindu EducationPlus pre-counselling session in Hubli on June 8 was a success, going by the number of students and parents who flocked to the venue, the BVB College of Engineering and Technology. The crowd, which was hungry for information, included those who had come from the neighbouring districts, besides Bellary and Goa.

The programme concentrated on helping aspirants in making the choice of branch and college, the strengths and weaknesses of the disciplines in terms of marketability and job opportunity. Unlike the students and parents from Bangalore, Mysore and Mangalore, those from northern Karnataka find themselves bogged down on this crucial issue during the counselling.

A team of experts, including Ashok Shettar, Principal, BVB College of Engineering and Technology, Hubli; M.G. Hiremath, Superintendent of the Karantaka Institute of Medical Sciences, Hubli; and Prasad, Head of the Department of Community Dentistry of the SDM College of Dental Science, Dharwad, not only made a good presentation on the prospects of each of the branches but also participated in the interactive session which followed, with the students shooting innumerable questions.

"It was quite a satisfying experience," said Sripati Acharya, who had come from Bellary with his daughter. "We never knew the nuances of the whole process till we attended the programme," he said, epitomising the feelings of most of those who had turned up.

The message of the exercise was the need for the students to be prepared before the counselling began. It was not enough if one got the desired branch in engineering but also checked the status of the college before making a decision, Dr. Shettar said. Dr. Prasad and Dr. Hiremath spoke on scope of dentistry and medicine and said one should keep in mind the availability of patients, especially in private colleges.

The Deputy Editor and Chief of Bureau, The Hindu, Bangalore, A. Jayaram, welcomed the gathering. The Regional Manager, The Hindu, Mangalore, T. Ravi, proposed a vote of thanks.
