AMBTIOUS: An eye on both grades and pay packet
PEOPLE ARE of the general notion that the present generation is irresponsible and doesn't value time or money, but this is not true. More and more young people are opting to work and study at the same time, which is a responsible choice. Various colleges are offering the option of gaining work experience while pursuing one's studies simultaneously, especially at the post-graduate level.
Shawn Crasta, an employee of Hewlett Packard, is currently enrolled at Symbiosis Centre for Distance Learning (SCDL) and is also keen on enrolling at Wigan and Leigh College. He says, "It's all about time management. One must also pay careful attention while judging the validity and recognition of a degree from a certain institution." Asked whether it was difficult to find sufficient time for his studies, he replied: "All course material is available beforehand and extra information can be gleaned online. So, I find absolutely no difficulty in juggling the two as I have adequate time for both." Colleges such as Wigan and Leigh offer students placements as trainees, in their particular line, in multinational companies so that on completion of their courses they would be equipped to tackle any assignment. Numerous companies offer educational loans free of interest to their employees in order to upgrade their performance as well as to peak output flow.
SCDL holds one-day classes shortly before the semester exams in order to provide a thorough revision for the students. Qualified individuals are present at such sessions to answer queries of students.
An exception to this rule is the highly esteemed CA examination. This is one tough cookie to crack. Only highly intelligent or very dedicated students are able to attempt this examination while working at the same time. "The portions are vast and tuitions take upto 3-5 hours of my time. Trying to juggle work as well as this heavy study load is virtually impossible," says Kiran, a call centre employee.
Recent developments in technology have led to the convenience of attending classes at a centre, in or near one's office, three hours a day, once a week, which is ideal for people who want to move up in their career without quitting their job, leaving their city or compromising on the institute of preference.
In a programme offered by Narsee Monjee Institute of Management Studies (deemed university), participants go to a DIRECWAY classroom where lectures are beamed via satellite to all the classrooms.
Thus participants are able to see, hear and interact with the faculty just as they do in a classroom.
Len, who is working in a BPO, says: "It takes a perfect blend of dedication, will power and plain hard work. Entering the corporate world while pursuing an MBA degree has given me the exposure I need to understand the outside world in a better light."
