Eminent academicians fielded questions from EAMCET rankers on a variety of subjects at the second pre-counselling guidance session organised by The Hindu-Education Plus at Sri Seshasai Kalyana Mandapam in Vijayawada on Saturday.

The questions were mostly related to opportunities that would come out of each engineering course and also the choice of colleges available in the State. Some students sought names of colleges that were good in teaching different courses, while the organisers preferred to leave the choice to students themselves. But one thing they were asked to remember was to look for good infrastructure, qualified faculty and a learning academic atmosphere.

The questions were answered by the following experts: The Director of Institute of Electronic Governance, G. Subba Rao, the Head of Department of Computer Science and Information Technology at Acharya Nagarjuna University, P. Trimurthy, the Principal of V.R. Siddhartha Engineering College, V. Vasudeva Rao, and the Assistant Professor of Mechanical Department at V.R. Siddhartha College, J.N.M. Rao.

The workshop's sponsor was Sri Chaitanya Educational Institutions and the local sponsors were the State Bank of India and Varun Bajaj in Vijayawada.

The following are the Questions & Answers:

  • What is the scope for telecommunications engineering? Which are the best colleges offering this course?

The course is excellent and has tremendous scope. If a student acquires additional skills in VLSI and embedded systems, it will fetch greater opportunities. There are a total of 19,820 seats in telecommunications engineering offered by private and government colleges.

  • Is it beneficial to do computer science as a single course or in combination with electronics and IT?

Look at the syllabus offered in the course. Whether IT or computer science, you should have perfect knowledge of the subject, besides proficiency in soft skills. You must be on a continuous upgradation of skills to meet global market demands.

  • What are the advantages and disadvantages of studying in deemed universities?

A deemed university enjoys flexibility in course, selection of syllabus and ability to change to new technologies in a short time-gap. There will be speed of change. But one should check whether the same standards are maintained now. There should be good academic environment, live discussion among students and staff.

  • What is the scope for metallurgical engineering?

Very few colleges offer this course. There are 80 to 90 seats at NIT, Warangal. It carried not much of a demand.

  • What is the difference between accredited and non-accredited colleges? Which are to be preferred?

It doesn't matter much. Go to the college concerned and verify whether they are providing good administration and choosing proper syllabus or not. The AICTE has fixed certain norms. Check up whether they are being followed before joining the college.

  • What are the prospects for civil engineering?

Right now, construction activity has picked up a lot in the State. The Government is going for a number of irrigation projects. But the demand is on the lower side. There will be an added advantage if you acquire skills in structural and architectural engineering. These are best components for civil engineering. Knowledge of `vastu' will give you an edge over others going by the current market demands. It is a misapprehension that civil engineering has limited jobs.

  • What sort of opportunities are available for engineering students in the defence services?

They prefer hardcore software engineering graduates with strong mathematics background. They attach a lot of importance to crypto sciences. If you are well versed with information technology, computer science and security of networks, they will mould you. Select jobs will be offered for architectural engineers when there is ship-building activity.

  • Which one is better, computer science or electronics and communications?

IT and computer science are their own domain. Here, value addition comes into picture. Study of electronics depends on principles and technicalities, which one has to master.

  • What are the opportunities for ECE and EEE?

ECE deals with electronics and communications. It is necessary for landing jobs in organisations like BHEL. EEE has electronics and electrical, offering jobs in the APGenco and such organisations.

  • What should I choose between course and college?

Would you prefer to wait for getting a wonderful bike or reach the destination by riding the available one? It is wiser to choose a course first and then look for the best available college depending on your rank.

  • I am a non-local candidate and got a rank of around 10,000 in EAMCET. What is the reservation being given and what courses I will be able to get?

Fifteen per cent seats are reserved for non-local students. The State Council of Higher Education (APSCHE) has come out with a booklet on information pertaining to courses and seats available in engineering colleges across the State. Students can also look for this on the APSCHE website. The student can also enter the website of Institute for Electronic Governance at www.ieg.gov.in/eamcetguide and enter hall ticket number. It will display details of State rank and regional rank, besides listing out courses and colleges offered for the same rank in 2004.

  • My daughter got a rank about 7,000 in EAMCET. What are opportunities for girls in aeronautical engineering?

There are only 150 seats in aeronautical engineering in Osmania University.

The course is not available in the remaining Andhra and Rayalaseema area colleges. The OU area seats will be filled as per existing reservations.

  • What are the career opportunities in biomedical engineering?

There will be plenty of opportunities if one does M.Sc in biomedical engineering abroad after completing B.Tech course here. In our country, there is not much research and development activity on this front.

  • What are the prospects for girls taking up chemical engineering? How many seats are available?

National Institute of Technology, Warangal, is offering the course. Girls will not be given any reservation in filling the seats. Admissions into NIT are made through AIEEE. The career prospects are not encouraging as on date.

  • Will architectural engineers command demand when they come out of college?

Mostly, architectural engineers are self-employed. They work together with structural engineers. Their job is supplementary in nature.

  • Jawahar Knowledge Centres are known to have helped students with latest technologies and soft skills. Should we join only those colleges where this activity is there?

These centres are set up with the Government's initiative. Here, missing elements will be bridged and employability is stressed. There are 32 such centres in the State. It requires funds and infrastructure to set up these centres in public-private partnerships.

  • How long computer science will sustain its demand?

Now, there are over 1 million jobs being created in the country. India's share in this is rapidly growing. The number of jobs may increase to 2.5 lakhs in the next five years.

  • How do we know that a particular college has good faculty? Can you suggest some colleges offering best courses?

Grading of colleges is not being done. You can make personal inquiries or read carefully when the colleges make announcements about their services. It is a miscalculation that a particular college has got good faculty in computer science and IT.

  • What are the chances for IT and industrial production courses for four years down the line?

Nowadays, industrialisation is less. It shows the extent of possibilities available for students. On the other hand, the services sector is rapidly expanding. It throws up a lot of services with regard to IT.

  • How many seats are reserved under NCC and sports quotas?

One per cent seats is reserved for NCC and 0.5 per cent for sports. The reservations are followed in each college and each course, and not by the overall seats available in the State. For details, buy a booklet published by the State Council of Higher Education or look up their website.

  • Is astrophysics available for engineering students?

It is not available. It is done in M.Sc and the course is offered at the Centre for Astrophysics located, Pune.

    Tirupati session:

  • What are the prospects for aeronautical engineering?

Though it has a bright future, the chances may narrow down as it is a specialised area. Mechanical engineering students too fit into this slot. While a very few number of colleges offer the course at the B.Tech level, diplomas are offered by many private colleges.

  • What are the skill sets required for a student of an ordinary engineering college to compete with IIT and AIEEE products in the global arena?

Prepare for GRE when you are half way through, take advanced GRE test and highlight your other accomplishments at the college level.

Contact the professor concerned at the institution abroad with your specific requirements.

  • Please throw some light on the subjects like mechatronics and electronic instrumentation.

These are hybrid courses. Mechatronics is a combination of mechanical and electronic engineering, while the latter is an amalgam of electronic engineering and instrumentation. Taking regular courses first and then going for specialisation at a higher level is advisable.

  • I am interested in Cryogenics. What do you suggest?

Cryogenics too has a great potential. After completing B.Tech (Mechanical), go for M.Tech (Cryogenics) at IIT Kharagpur or Roorkee.
