For students whose hopes of entering the medical profession have been dashed to the ground due to the extremely high cut-offs or the exorbitant capitation fees, all's not lost. If you have 50 per cent in Physics, Chemistry and Biology in Plus two examinations, the Lugansk State Medical University (LSMU) at Ukraine, under the Ministry of Health, Government of Ukraine provides you an internationally recognised M.B.B.S.M.S and M.D qualification at an unimaginably affordable price. "A special international degree of a general doctor is what you get after the successful completion of the six years programme," says Irina Petrovna, Vice-Chancellor of the University, who was in the city recently to provide on-the-spot admissions to aspirants. (See interview) I.Sridharan, Director of Eden Education Center, Chennai, the official representative of the University in Tamil Nadu, says "Approximately 47,000 students have applied for medical seats in the State, and only 1,400 seats are available so where will the rest of 45,600 students who have dreamt of the studying medicine for the 12 to 15 years of their life go?"

But why Ukraine?

"The entire course is taught in English and it is recognised by the Medical Council of India as well as the World Health Organisation (WHO)," says Mr. Sridharan.

Indian students must obtain a certificate of eligibility from the MCI prior to proceeding to Ukraine, and on successful completion of the degree, they must come back and pass a screening test and register with MCI to practise in India.

Eligibility

Fifty per cent marks in Physics, Chemistry and Biology at the plus two level makes you eligible. And you must have a passport.

What about the cost?

"It will cost you about Rs. 11-12 lakhs for the entire six years education which includes a year of house surgeon duties" according to Mr. Sridharan.

He says during the first year the cost works out to Rs. 2,70,000 and it will come down to 1,70,000 for the remaining five years. This includes the tuition fees, boarding and lodging, insurance and to and fro tickets every year.

Scholarships too!!

There are 174 seats this year for students from the Southern States and of these 75 would get a scholarship for the first year. The University is conducting a scholarship exam for the first time in India and the quantum of scholarship is directly related to your performance in the scholarship exam. If you obtain 85 per cent marks in the scholarship entrance examination, you will be eligible for 100 per cent scholarship and 75 per cent scholarship will be given to those who obtain 80 per cent.

What does the exam test?

"There are 200 questions on Physics, Chemistry and Biology to test the knowledge of the students," says Dr. Petrovna.
