`We prefer Indians'

Puja S Navin

How is the system of medical education at Ukraine different from India?

In Europe, each country has their local system, but there are four different levels of accreditations across countries. At the lowest level is the medical school, which qualifies is for nurses and obstetricians.

The second level is the medical college, then medical institutions and private medical universities that give a general doctor degree. With this degree, a person can practise only within the local country where he or she studies. But the highest level of accreditation is the State Medical University, which provides an international degree. Students get the special international degree of a general doctor, which empowers them to work in several European countries, in U.K., Canada, Australia and of course India. But to practice in India, they have to pass a screening test once they return.

There are only 12 universities in Europe that have this distinction and two of these are in our country. One is at Kiev, the State capital and the other is our University at Lugansk.

What about post graduation?

The postgraduate courses vary in duration according to the type of specialisation. For example, a general surgery course may be of two years duration, while neurosurgery will be of three and eye surgery could take a year and a half.

Are there any other scholarships available?

Based on their academic performance in the first year, students can get a scholarship of about US $ 40 per month from the Ministry of Health, Ukraine. Only eight to ten per cent of students are eligible.

And how do you find Indian students?

"We prefer Indian students. We have students from Malaysia, Singapore and many countries in Europe, but the level of knowledge of Indian students is higher, they are very intelligent, very open and very well behaved. They learn the language very soon and are very active. They are like a big family on campus and even celebrate special functions (Diwali).
