Commendable creation, surely

Creative minds came up with innovative designs that are set to change the face of the State's steel city - Visakhapatnam - forever.

A majestic international airport, with the shiny steel dominating the proposed project, was given shape to by budding architects from all over the country, though it was for a competition. Whether the Government would take up the project now or later, the designs surely floored officials and prominent architects of the country.

Students of IIT-Roorkee won the first prize in the competition conducted by the Institute for Steel Development & Growth (INSDAG), a non-profit making member based organisation established at Kolkata by the Ministry of Steel and major steel producers of the country.

The theme of the competition this year was `International Airport Terminal Building' at Visakhapatnam.

The second prize was shared by IIT-Roorke and MGR Education and Research Institute, Chennai.

The third prize was shared by IIT-Roorkee and LAD and SRP College, Nagpur.

The theme is a real life project of Airport Authority of India (AAI), and INSDAG interacted with the authority concerned for making such steel-intensive construction in India. The selection process of the entries for the competition in subject involved two-stage evaluation - one at the zonal level (North, South, East, West) by the zonal committees and the second at the national level by the Central Selection Committee in the final round of competition at Kolkata.

The winners will be awarded by some eminent personalities on July 14 during a high-profile technical seminar at Hotel Taj Landsen, Bandra, Mumbai.

The INSDAG primarily works towards the development of steel usage technology and technical marketing by diversifying into applications of steel in new areas; upgrading skills and know-how through refresher courses, workshops, etc., creating awareness among potential users and highlighting the benefits of steel vis-à-vis other conventional materials.

The competitions that are being held since 1999-2000 is aimed at recognising, appreciating and finally rewarding young and budding architects of the country for `Excellence in Steel Architecture'.
