Kamal Hassan has been using it for a long time. So has A.R. Rahman. A slew of software has changed the way films are made or music is composed in the past few years.
Now, a Chennai-based institute is offering a set of courses on software used in shooting, editing and making music. Courses at Audio Media Education start with ``an introductory course in film-making with Apple iLife.''
"The course is aimed at school students and those who want to create their own movie or music," says managing director, T. Selvakumar.
GarageBand, which comes free with a Mac machine, allows the user to record, perform and even make use of multiple tracks. "It is a music-making tool for even non-musicians," says Mr. Selvakumar. Especially, when you cannot afford a professional musician to create the background score for your documentary on a shoestring budget.
`One man crew' is aimed at a little more serious bunch — documentary filmmakers, photojournalists and final-year communication students raring to make movies. Handycam shots will be enough for the Apple iBook and Apple Final Cut Express HD to make a professional filmmaker out of you.
For those keen to join the industry as studio professionals with an Apple certificate, there is a six-month course that includes interaction with field personnel, some theory (audio, video or film) and editing classes using Final Cut Pro level 1 and 2, and Apple Motion. Apple-designed courseware will take you through the motions. Director Vasanth will teach cinematography.
According to Mr. Selvakumar, the USP of the course is that students get to learn Motion (film-making), Final Cut Pro (film and video editing for digital movies), Soundtrack Pro (improving your audio edit) and Apple DVD Studio Pro (for converting film to DVD format with surround audio and DTS). Candidates have to pass the online examination at this Apple authorised training centre, which has a company-certified trainer.
"After completing the course, students can go for one-month apprenticeship at the AVM studios," adds Mr. Selvakumar.
