KERALA UNIVERSITY
CONVERGING AHEAD: The Centre for Convergence Media Studies, under the Department of Communication and Journalism, University of Kerala, is offering a Postgraduate Diploma course in Convergence Media, in collaboration with the Centre for Development of Imaging Technology (C-DiT), an autonomous institution of the Government of Kerala.
This will be a one-year (two-semester) full-time programme, the first of its kind to be offered by any university in India, in the emerging area of convergence media technology. The programme will combine the academic expertise in the area of Media and Communication education available with the Department of Communication and Journalism, University of Kerala and the professional expertise of C-DIT in the areas of Digital video production and New media communication and training.
It is a multi-disciplinary programme open to graduates in any discipline. Admission will be based on an entrance test in which the candidate's general awareness and aptitude in communication with respect to visual designing, Programming and content creation will be put to test.
The University will offer this programme from its Palayam campus, where a state-of-the-art digital media lab and classroom facilities are being set up. The major component of the course, which is the technical training being offered in convergence media technologies will be facilitated and provided by the C-DIT.
The Convergence Media Programme offered by the University of Kerala and C-DiT is envisaged as a convergence of technology and strong academics. The academic programme contains a balanced mixture of introduction to the theory of media and communication and familiarisation of content for the traditional media and practical courseware for skill development in new media technologies.
CUSAT
IIT INITIATIVE: A high-level team from the Ministry of Human Resources Development (MHRD) will soon review the progress made by the Cochin University of Science and Technology (Cusat) in its attempt to achieve the status of an Indian Institute of Technology (IIT).
Cusat had submitted a Detailed Project Report (DPR) to the ministry two months back. The team from MHRD will analyse whether Cusat had initiated the academic reforms required for becoming an IIT. Cusat had agreed to restructure the engineering education offered at the School of Engineering and Cochin University College of Engineering, Pulimkunnu.
The University had also initiated programmes for improving the quality of teaching on the campus. A final decision on IIT status for Cusat will be taken based on the report given by the expert team from MHRD. The State Government has assured the university authorities that it will render all help for upgrading the university into an IIT.
SANSKRIT UNIVERSITY
POPULARISING SANSKRIT: The Sree Sankaracharya University of Sanskrit has initiated the popularisation of Sanskrit learning project in the State. The new programme will be implemented in hundreds of selected schools in various districts. About 1,000 teachers were appointed to conduct the project in schools. Training will be given on the basics of Sanskrit language. Effort will also be made to popularise the language among students at the graduate and postgraduate levels. The Sanskrit popularisation programme is supported by the Centre and State Government.

ENTRANCE TEST: Kerala Agricultural University will conduct the entrance test for admissions to its master's programme in various disciplines on October 4 and 5 and the interview for admission to doctorate programme on October 6 and 7 at the College of Cooperation, Banking and Management, Vellanikkara.

SENIOR RESEARCH FELLOW: Applications have been invited for filling up a temporary position of Research Fellow in the Meat Technology Unit of the College of Veterinary and Animal Sciences, in a research scheme sponsored by the Bhabha Atomic Research Centre (BARC).
Candidates who possess M.VSc. degree in any one of the disciplines - Meat Science and Technology, Livestock Production Technology, Veterinary Public Health - can apply.

SCIENTIFIC ASSISTANTS: The Rice Research Station (RRS), Moncompu, requires scientific assistants for work relating to plant breeding and genetics, soil science and agricultural chemistry/ agronomy, agricultural entomology and plant pathology.

CALICUT UNIVERSITY
VIVA VOCE: The viva voce of the final year MA Sociology (2005 April) examinations under the School of Distance Education of the University earlier scheduled to be held on September 26, has been postponed to October 7. The viva voce centre will be the Academic Staff College on the university campus
CONTACT CLASSES: The contact classes for the second year MA Hindi and Arabic students registered with the School of Distance Education are scheduled at the hall of the School of Distance Education in the University campus from September 19 to October 1. They will be conducted from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. and again from 1.30 p.m. to 4.30 p.m. Students will have to appear for the classes along with their ID cards.
CHANGE IN MBA EXAM DATE: The examinations of the third and fifth semester MBA course scheduled for September 26 and 30 have been postponed. The examination for the paper, `Money and Capital Market' will now be held on October 13 and the paper, `Enterprise Resource Planning' originally scheduled for September 30, will now be held on October 17. There is no change in examination centre and time.
KANNUR UNIVERSITY
NSS AWARDS: The university has instituted one National Service Scheme Cell Award each for the best programme officer and best volunteer for boys and girls. Working reports from NSS units in colleges affiliated to the university are invited for consideration of the award. The reports should be sent through Principals. The reports should reach the NSS Programme Coordinator of the University before September 24.
