The University Students Advisory Bureau (USAB) launched its coaching and training programmes for the students last week.

S.P. Thyagarajan, Vice-Chancellor, University of Madras, who spoke on the occasion, said such courses offered by the USAB would be beneficial to the student community.

These certificate and diploma courses are value-added courses that will give them an edge in the job market. By identifying the focus area of development and designing the courses accordingly, the USAB tries to enhance the skills of the student community. The BPO sector requires graduates with good communicative English, and keeping this in mind, a training programme is being offered, he said.

J.M. Balmurugan, managing director, Tamil Nadu Adi Dravidar Housing and Development Corporation Ltd. (TAHDCO), who inaugurated the training programmes, suggested that the USAB extend such training and coaching programmes to the other metros in Tamil Nadu. He requested those students belonging to the SC/ST community to make the best use of various skill-oriented training programmes sponsored free of cost for them. THADCO has sponsored two of the training programes.

Harish L. Metha, Educationist and syndicate member of Univeristy of Madras, participated. Certificates were distributed to those students who were selected under the Science Talent Promotion Scheme. Those who completed the air travel and ticketing course were also given certificates.

Academic Profile of Tamil Nadu, a handbook compiled by Susila Mariappan, containing details about institutions that come under the University of Madras, was released on the occasion.
