DR. ALAGAPPA UNIVERSITY, Karaikudi, has launched Alagappa Performing Arts Academy, which provides courses in performing arts. There are online certificate, degree and diploma courses on offer for students who have a teacher to give them practical training.
Hema Kala Academy that has been in existence for the last five years in Chennai, teaching dance, music, yoga and drawing, in association with the university, has launched Nrithyakshetra, affiliated to the Alagappa Performing Arts Academy. Nrithyakshetra is a dance school headed by Muralidharan, who was instrumental in framing the syllabus for the online course on Bharatanatyam including books and DVDs. Participants can send doubts with videos of performances to get them clarified.
Nrithyakshetra is at 15, Kannadasan Salai, T. Nagar, Chennai. Students studying here will have the advantage of direct tutelage. On completion of the first-year, students will get a certificate in Bharatanatyam and at the end of the second-year they get a diploma. On completion of the three-year course, they will be eligible for a degree. "The course will be useful for students who have completed their arangetram, for it will now give them a degree in dance,'' Mr. Muralidharan said. The course is scheduled to begin in end-January.
