Jobs or exams

Last week we visited an MBA College for placement - a leading college in Hyderabad. The college placement team did a reasonable job of getting the students to the pre-placement talk, after which many of the students appeared for the aptitude test. Each student was given an option - to take the aptitude test only if they were interested in a job with one of India's largest companies at a whopping earning potential of over Rs. 3 lakhs per annum for a fresh MBA student.

Those who passed the aptitude test were asked to appear for a group discussion and interview - a few days later. Now begins the surprise - More than 50 per cent of the shortlisted students failed to appear for GD and interviews. When we checked back with the placement coordinator, we discovered two issues.

First, the students were not accessible directly and many were not checking their email especially the email announcing the GD & final interview. Second, many students felt that they could not spare two hours for GD since they were in the middle of their 3rd semester exams. When we called the placement officer and gave some of the students a second chance, only a few turned up and the placement team was unable to convince the students or the faculty that spending two hours, after 6 p.m. (when there are no exams) for a crucial interview, is very important.

So my question is what is more important? Spending two hours preparing for 3rd Semester exam or using that time to get a job, which will change their life forever? When will faculty and directors of colleges learn that if students do not get right jobs once they complete their course, then they will be adding to the list of "Educated & unemployed" in our country?
