NANJIL CUISINE: `Theme lunch' under way at Subbulakshmi Lakshmipathy College of Science in Madurai.
Struggle for existence, survival of the fittest and exploitation of nature have brought untold sufferings to humanity, said R. Vanniarajan, Principal, Vivekananda College, while presiding over a State-level symposium on `Vermicomposting Technology for Rural Development,' jointly organised by the Post Graduate Department of Zoology of the college at Tiruvedakam and School of Biological Sciences of Madurai Kamaraj University. He said the earth was always ready to fulfil the needs of her needy children but not the greedy. Exploitation of nature was the root cause of environmental degradation and pollution, threatening the very life on earth.
R. Ilango, Vice-Principal, spoke on organic farming and its relevance to the country while P. Gunasekaran, Syndicate member, MK University, emphasised the need for dissemination of vermicomposting technology in rural areas, particularly among weaker sections.
PR. Athappan, Dean, Industrial consultancy, MK University, in his valedictory address, wanted colleges to connect with the industry to augment entrepreneurial skills of youth.
Swami Divyananda, secretary, inaugurated the symposium.

A ten-day National Service Scheme winter camp organised by volunteers of Fatima College at Anaiyur could be described as an experience in mutual learning and sharing. During the camp, the college contributed financially to buy sand to level potholes and trenches created by rain and flood. The damaged roads were given a facelift by the students.
To cater to the medical needs of villagers, a free medical camp was organised with the help of Meenakshi Mission Hospital and Damien Hospital, Nilakottai.
The volunteers had an enriching experience by adjusting themselves to the rural setting with limited comforts of life.
The villagers also had an opportunity to have awareness sessions on traffic rules, consumer rights, disaster management, AIDS and environmental ethics.
The students conducted games and competitions for the young and old people of the village.

In an attempt to make the college campus green and commemorate the memory of K.L.N. Krishnan, founder-president, KLN College of Engineering conducted a tree plantation campaign for two days last week.
Fifty NSS volunteers planted 100 saplings on the campus. The students also took an oath to nurture these plants throughout their four-year course of study.

The Department of Physics of Madura College celebrated the International Year of Physics 2005 by conducting various programmes. As part of the celebrations, quiz programmes and paper presentation sessions were held on Friday in which students from various colleges in and around Madurai participated.
P. Muthusubramanian of Madurai Kamaraj University delivered a special lecture on `Einstein's contribution to Physics and its impact on frontier areas like Nano-technology and Photonics.' S. Muthusamy, president, Madura College Board, presided over the function. M.S. Meenakshi Sundaram, secretary, offered felicitations.
M.R. Mariappan of Devangar Arts College, D. Puroshothaman of SVN College and S. Meena Sundari of Lady Doak College won the first, second and third prizes respectively in paper presentation.
Teams comprising A. Vijayakumar and K. Ramar and D.K.N. Rajkumar and R. Selvakumar of American College bagged the first and third places in quiz programme while A. Shalini and J. Shama Nazreen of Lady Doak College won the second prize.

A one-day programme on tourism welfare was organised at Meenakshi Sundareswarar Temple on December 23 by a team of 30 students from Annai Fathima College of Arts and Science.

To create an awareness of social tourism, students holding placards took out a rally from Periyar Bus Stand to the temple. They also cleaned the temple tank.

PKN Arts and Science College organised a cycle expedition on `anti-terrorism' on Friday.
Sixty students, including 30 girls, accompanied by three staff members participated in the expedition from Tirumangalam to Gandhiniketan Ashram, T. Kallupatti, to inspire the people to yearn for harmony. The Principal, T. Dhanapalan, flagged off the expedition.
Fifty-two students of the college also participated in a self-employment training programme on leather technology, screen-printing, manufacturing soaps and detergents at Gandhiniketan Ashram.

The NMSSVN College, Nagamalai, organised a counselling session for non-teaching staff on Tuesday.
In his presidential address, K. Natarajan, Principal, stressed the need for counselling for non-teaching staff as they were meeting the day-to-day requirements of the college.
B. Ananthavalli, Director, Valliammal Institution, shared her counselling experience with participants.
P. Sadasivan, Head, Department of History, welcomed the gathering. R. Bernardshaw, Vice-Principal, and B. Kalaiarasan, college superintendent, spoke.

The second year students of Hotel Management and Catering Science of Subbulakshmi Lakshmipathy College of Science organised `Nanjil cuisine,' a theme lunch that has its origin in Nagercoil, on the college premises on Tuesday.
A buffet of 25 mouth-watering dishes, which have not been made popular in Tamil Nadu, was prepared by students and presented to a gathering of parents and guests. The Principal, R. Srinivasan, inaugurated the programme.

The NSS volunteers of EM Gopalakrishnakone Yadava Women's College conducted a 10-day special camp at Tiruppalai-Uchhaparambumedu where students undertook activities such as desilting channels, planting tree saplings, conducting medical camps, providing free meals and distributing clothes. E.M.G. Soundararajan, college president, presided over the function while Siva Madhavan, vice-president, K. Azhagu, treasurer, and S. Raju, NSS Coordinator, Madurai Kamaraj University, spoke.

Students should work hard for the first 25 years so that they would lead a successful life later in life and NSS volunteers should prepare themselves to endure any situation, said P. Maruthamuthu, Vice-Chancellor, Madurai Kamaraj University, while inaugurating a 10-day special camp of NSS units 92, 93 and 95 of Madurai Kamaraj University College at Appan Thirupathi and Velliankundram on Wednesday.
The Principal, R. Muthulakshmi, welcomed the gathering while NSS Coordinator, S. Raju, Sam Chelliah, Director of Youth NSS wing of Tamil Nadu, E.K. Pulikesi, president of Velliyankundram panchayat, S. Irulappan, NSS Programme Officer, spoke about the importance of the camp.
