A `yatra' with a difference

A visit by students to hospitals located around the college revealed the utter callousness with which they treated waste material. But the students were successful in bringing them around to dispose of the waste in a proper manner for the health of society

LOYOLA ACADEMY: Many political yatras are carried out every year. My friends and I also planned to join the yatra bandwagon. But, this was for a special cause and we decided to take that all-important first step outside to conserve nature.
We decided to visit all the hospitals located around our college to inspect and educate them about the hospital waste management. And this cause started with all of us going by walk rather than vehicles. We walked around 4 to 5 km and visited four hospitals to know about their disposal management.
It turned out to be an enlightening experience because all those sordid stories we heard about hospitals came true. Most of them had proper disposal systems, but the waste materials were carelessly mixed with the other waste and disposed off.
Creating awareness
We talked to them about the alarming and hazardous affect it can have on society's health. We also told them that one of the causes for AIDS is bad disposal of hospital waste. But this did not cut much ice with the hospital authorities. Stung by their insensitivity, we warned them about dragging the matter to NGOs.
And then we could see some positive change in their attitude as they promised us to take better care in waste disposal.
