Workshop focuses on sensor networks



ON EMERGING TRENDS: A two-day national workshop on Wireless and Sensor Networks held at the Coimbatore Institute of Technology.

THE COIMBATORE Institute of Technology organised a national workshop on wireless and sensor networks. It was organised in association with AU-KBS Research Centre, Chennai. The workshop focused on emerging wireless technologies such as Wi - Fi and Wi - max systems and wireless sensor networks.

Experts from Chennai delivered technical lectures and made demonstrations. It was a platform for participants to discuss and gain expertise on emerging trends in the area of wireless technology.

DEPARTMENT OF Social Work, Bishop Appasamy College of Arts and Science organised "Horizon-06", a programme for mentally and physically challenged people and orphaned children. It was organised with a view to give an opportunity to disabled children to prove their talents in various fields.

Nearly 450 participants from 32 organisations participated in the programme. S.U. Karuppa Samy, Deputy Commissioner of Police, Coimbatore, was the chief guest.

GURUVAYURAPPAN INSTITUTE of Management conducted a national seminar on "Global Competitiveness: Issues and Challenges before Indian Corporates." S. Sivasubramanian, Vice-Chancellor, Bharathiar University, stressed on the needs of Indian corporates to follow the best corporate governance practices, be socially responsive and comply with rules and regulations in order to be globally competitive.

HINDUSTHAN SCHOOL of Management conducted a seminar - "Biznet." The first session dealt with the importance of health management. The importance of good communication skills and how MBAs could contribute to the progress of the nation followed in the two sessions that followed.

NEHRU ARTS and Science College, Thirumalpalayam organised a two-day national-level seminar on "Current Trends in Advanced Biological Research." S. Sivasubramaniam, Vice-Chancellor, Bharathiar University, inaugurated the seminar. He said that colleges should evolve into learning institutions and should encourage their students to think. The seminar had technical sessions and poster and paper presentations.

SRI RAMAKRISHNA Engineering College signed a MoU with IBM, Bangalore, for the IBM Power Academy Programme. A similar MoU was signed with Novell-owned technologies to start Novell Open Source Lab. IBM plans to give advanced training in IBM software to 100 students every year. It was inaugurated by Subhash Chandra, Regional Manager of IBM.

CHRIST THE King Polytechnic College organised a camp on "Confidence in Life." It discussed how a person with confidence can overcome the difficulties in life and meet with success. A film on tuberculosis and AIDS was screened to create public awareness on these diseases. More than 300 people attended the seminar.

SOCIAL WORK: Student volunteers of VLB Janakiammal Polytechnic College planting saplings as part of the NSS camp held at Ettimadai.

DR. GRD College of Science organised a special NSS camp at Sengodagoundanpudur and Muthugoundanpudur villages in the Sulur Panchayat Union. The theme for this year's special camp was "Youth for Recharging of Water Resources." During the 10-day camp, a rally was organised to eliminate child labour and create awareness about the need to eliminate child labour. Debates on various social issues and cultural programmes were organised in which the village youth also participated. Diabetes screening was also conducted as part of the camp.

DR. NGP Arts and Science College held its annual festival, "NGP Fest '05." Dance programmes and fashion show were organised as part of the event. U.L Pradeep, third year student of BBM, was crowned Mr. NGP and Anu Kuriakose, a third year BBM student was crowned Ms. NGP.

SNMV COLLEGE organised a workshop for Bioscience lecturers and research scholars. During the programme, teachers were given hands-on training in molecular biology, animal cell structure and immunology. Staff members from colleges took part in the workshop.

VLB JANAKIAMMAL Polytechnic College organised a special NSS camp at Ettimadai village. The volunteers constructed tanks for rainwater harvesting and conducted a drive to remove polythene bags and plastics from the streets. Veterinary camps and health and eye camps were also organised in addition to rangoli competition for women and children.
